Comment Is An English Language History Primer in Order? (Score 1) 341

In case that wasn't a very droll joke...

Brits? British? You mean the English? Why ever would they wish to put their own slant on the English language? For that matter I wonder where English came from? Certainly not the English. Could it have been? Maybe? Possibly? Or was English originally from Anglo-Saxon (read German) origins modified by the French language spoken by the Normans who successfully invaded of all places, England (home of the English)?

And why on earth would the French language used by the Normans cause Latin based words to be infused into the English language along with other changes in spelling and grammar? I know! Of course, because it was posh in the 11th century!

Oh those crazy Brits 1000 years ago, messing with Old English to create Middle English just to mess up those pesky Americans. The who? Oh, they won't be around for another 600 years? Ah well, carry on then. Keep working on the development of Middle and Modern English. Hmmmm... modern English. I get it, the language of which American English is a dialect, a 'sub form', not really the original 'proper' form of the language. Wait, what were you saying about who murdering whose language?

Yeah, I worked in the U.S. for six years. So I know from TN and H1-B. So you had a good employer. I've seen and talked to too many people who didn't. So fuck you, you limited vision retard. Just because it worked for YOU alone, don't assume it is always the case. I am so sick of idiots who think that they know it all based on their own limited experience.

Personally, sure, I was generally given more even treatment because the companies knew I wouldn't put up with shit and didn't have that far to move back to Canada. Which I did eventually after having worked at ATT as a contractor for 13 months. People from other countries, possibly on that contract and definitely others, didn't have the options I had. You quit, you may have no more than a month to get find a new job or get out of the country. And having to go home for people from some other countries is a big shame to the family in those cultures. So they work like dogs until they manage to get a green card.

But to be fair U.S. companies also do things like create call centres in small economically bereft areas like butt fuck Oregon or Middle of the Desert, New Mexico, and work those people to shit too. And they know people will work like dogs because they are the only big employer there and if you get 'laid off' you'll not work there again.

Glad to see you were brave enough to post as AC.

What country? I know that in Canada this is the case. But in Canada contractors even through tech head hunters work as real contractors (i.e. the equivalent of 1099 employees in the U.S... they have to incorporate). They normally work as a secondary contractor (sub contractor) to the head hunters who act as the primary contractor. So they charge by the hour and $75/hour for a senior programmer or senior analyst is not unusual depending on the market. But I know in the U.S. tech recruiters/head hunters will also often hire people as employees and hire them out for specific contracts. Working as an employee of these companies you often do not get as much. And it all depends on the market. What one gets in New York City is way higher than what one gets in Saint Louis, say.

Also what perspective are you looking at this from? The company hiring the contractor or the contractor. The middlemen tech head hunter pimp companies take a big cut normally. So a end user company hiring the contractor could be paying $100/hour or more, and the contractor might only be getting $65 or $75/hour (again, depending on market).

Let's see... Republican Tea Bagger Religious freaks don't want assisted suicide for patients, and they don't want government assistance for health insurance. They want to force someone to remain alive even with no hope of recovery and/or while having to endure extreme pain or a miserable existence. And they want that person to pay for it! What if that person didn't have any money. Ah yes, then they and their supporters would say, "let them die!" So there is your solution, put some clause in to take away their money and give it to relatives and they can withhold funds, till the hospital board that supports the Republicans pulls the plug for non-payment. Hmmm..... give the funds to the relatives and let the hospital kill them.... not sure this works either way.

I'm wondering if there was any discriminatory thinking by the jury. Probably the troll's technical guy was neat and clean cut versus some hairy bearded academic sounding guy (whether well dressed or not, whether a nice guy or not, whether qualified or not). Average people have built in ideas of what qualified trustworthy 'real' business people look like. People here on /. may not like it, but regular folks do pay attention to that kind of thing and give more credence to people without the long hair and beard. It is why in business you don't see long haired bearded guys on Wall Street, running companies, or generally practicing Law. And before you throw out the exceptions to the rule just to be contrary, I'll say shut the fuck up from the start. Prove to me that 95+% of people in those professions are not like I described. People who go to financial planners want someone who looks 'normal' to them to help them with their money. The same thing happens in court rooms when it comes to talking about who owes who.

And I'm not saying they shouldn't have paid more credence to what Newegg's witness had to say. In fact I think the jury was completely wrong. And I like buying from Newegg and recommend them to anyone I know who says they are going to buy computer stuff online. But doing some thinking up front about appearances etc would probably have helped Newegg out a lot, and maybe won the case for them outright; instead of having to file an appeal.
