Comment Rental EVs are great... (Score 2) 214

I was recently ona holiday here in Australia where someone else on the trip rented a BYD Atto 3 EV and it worked great, even though we were traveling over 300km each way. We had to stop and charge for maybe 15-20 minutes at a fast charger in both directions (the cost of which was apparently included in the rental) but overall it was great.

Doesn't matter what the law says about repairing the equipment, the contract between McDonalds and the franchisees says that they must only use these specific Taylor ice-cream machines and that they must only get them fixed and maintained by Taylor.

Unless you somehow force McDonalds to remove the requirements from the contracts, any other changes to the law don't matter.

If you want a genuinely good safe, buy a safe with a good quality dial combination lock. No battery to run out of juice and no electronics to fail. And no backdoors in the system that could be exploited.

Oh and you need to buy said safe from a proper locksmith or safe company since nothing sold by a big-box store of any kind is in any way a "good safe"

How is Microsoft "breaking win32 compatibility"? I have many many win32 apps and games that run just fine. And secdrv.sys isn't even a Microsoft thing, the fact that an old insecure 3rd party driver doesn't work anymore is not the fault of Microsoft (although the decision to explicitly block it rather than let it run and fail is on them)

The "this is for security" argument is BS IMO.

A home screen web app is simply an icon on the home screen that, when pressed, triggers a "load this URL in Safari and pass it this special flag" action. Safari is the one that interprets the special flag and displays the app in the special full screen mode or whatever it is.

All Apple would need to do is to add a method for icons to go on the home screen that would (when activated) trigger Firefox or whatever along with the same special flag. What the individual 3rd party browsers do when they get the information is up to them.

Make it so that the API involved triggers a UI confirmation prompt (so that users know that what icon is being added, which browser it's going to open in and what URL the icon will go to) and there shouldn't be any real security problems.

If fuel cells made sense as a power source for road vehicles, someone would have figured it out by now (the technology has been around since the 60s if not earlier).

They make great electrical power sources for spacecraft (NASA has used them since the 60s) but they can't beat either internal combustion or batteries as a power source for road vehicles.
