Comment Fire and Proxmox (Score 1) 196

We recently had a major fire that knocked out our server infrastructure.
Our SAN and NAS were replicated to another facility but not our servers.
We had recently changed from HyperV to Proxmox running around 45VMs over 3 servers.
We had proxmox rebuilt on emergency hardware within 24hrs.

Proxmox is open source, and has amazing backup infrastructure.
It’s been rock solid for us.

Yep... my middle son had his very last ever high school exam this morning, before he graduates, (physics).
Comes into our room just before 6AM saying his sim is broken and wanting a paperclip to reseat it. Took about 5 minutes to work out it was Optus.

THIS dependency on always on internet creates lots of problems for a cashless society. If war or disaster (or you get 'de customered by the banking system for your social media posts or political affiliation) hits, we're screwed!

Comment Australia doesn't tip. (Score 4, Insightful) 273

This is Australia. We don't tip (unless its a very high end restaurant).
Tipping is almost a uniquely North American concept designed to allow restaurants to underpay their staff and thus hide the true cost of your meal.

In fact the price shown in Australia must include all taxes, unlike USA that loves to add all sorts of fees to the advertised price.. like state tax, resort fees, mandatory tips, etc etc.

Yep.
I know God is not popular on /., but one of the defining marks of Christianity, is we are all equal before God, King and Pauper.
Thus Christian countries tend to look after their poor and even give dignity to prisoners (Although the USA, having worshipped money for so long now is doing poorly in this regard).
Communism rejects the spiritual and turns their people into 'units of work' for the serving of system. Thats a big demotivator and thus you have a country somewhat devoid of humanity and still reaping the consequences of Stalin's legacy.

Stainless steel works better for eggs.
Thin layer of oil (we use macedamia) and no sticking but the eggs have to beaten. Unbeaten eggs will stick.
Stainless pan on an induction takes 30secs to heat and virtually no cleanup and will last decades.
Much easier to take care of than cast iron.

It’s been interesting watching Dr John Campbell on you tube going from raving advocate to completely scathing of mRNA vaccines.
Even on /. I was surprised by the almost blind defence of Pfizer et.al. when they haves been fined Billions in the past for unethical behaviour.
It’s clear now that mRNA escaped the injection site, lodged in other organs and produced inflammatory responses, including clotting, in a small but significant number of people and the overall mortality rate has significantly increased in most highly vaccinated countries.
