Submission + - Suggestions For Cute Gifts For Girlfriend 1

bestgift10 writes: Buying presents for girlfriends have always been hard for boys and will always be. That's exactly why it isn't rare to observe some men looking disappointed in the gift shops or the road. That's because they do not understand their girlfriend nicely and they don't have any hint of the preferences. Boys spend a great deal of time going from one store to another looking for the ideal gift for their girlfriend.

Some of the most common thoughts are totes, shoes, dresses. And to be honest, they make a great gift, especially if the woman loves fashion. You may go in one of the designer stores and ask the sales person about the most recent fashion and get it for your girl. However, all this could fail if you don't know her choice. In the event you purchase a shoe or dress it's possible to ruin everything if you don't understand the ideal size.

A digital camera can also be a gift ideas for girlfriend. Your girlfriend need not be an expert photographer to deal with a digital camera. Submission + - Flight sim group put malware in a jet and called it DRM (rockpapershotgun.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A company who makes add-ons for Flight Simulator X included malware in one of their downloadable jets, players have alleged. The malicious file is called ‘test.exe’ and it is designed to extract passwords from the Chrome web browser, according to the user who discovered it. The company in question, Flight Sim Labs, have since replaced the dirty jet with a clean one. But they say that to claim the file “indiscriminately dumps Chrome passwords” is “not correct information”, adding that the malware was “only extracted temporarily” and that it was targeted at pirates. The head of the company describes the file as “DRM”.

Submission + - Comcast Sues Vermont After the State Requires the Company To Expand Its Network (vtdigger.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Cable television giant Comcast is suing the Vermont Public Utility Commission over the panel’s decision to require the company to expand its network and step up support for community access TV if it wants to continue doing business in Vermont. A key issue is the services Comcast must provide to local community access systems that carry municipal government and school board meetings and other local events. The 26 community access systems have been pushing — against resistance by Comcast — for high-definition video, greater ability to operate from remote locations, and inclusion in the interactive program guides that Comcast customers can use to decide what to watch. The PUC — formerly known as the Public Service Board — in January issued a new 11-year permit for Comcast to operate in Vermont. In July the panel rejected the company’s request to drop some of the conditions attached to the permit.

In a lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Comcast argued that the PUC “exceeded its authority under federal and Vermont law” by imposing “numerous conditions on Comcast’s continued cable operations in the state that are arbitrary, unprecedented and will ultimately harm local cable subscribers by resulting in millions of dollars in increased cable costs.” It said the commission “did so despite overwhelming record evidence that Vermont cable subscribers do not want to incur any additional costs or fees for the kinds of conditions imposed” in the commission’s January order.

Submission + - South African lions eat 'poacher', leaving just his head (bbc.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A suspected big cat poacher has been eaten by lions near the Kruger National Park in South Africa, police say.

The animals left little behind, but some body parts were found over the weekend at a game park near Hoedspruit.

"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions," Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP.

"They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains."

Police have not yet established the victim's identity. A loaded hunting rifle and ammunition were found next to the body, South African website Eyewitness News reports.

Submission + - 1,600 PS3 Games Can Be Played At Up To 10K UHD Resolution On Windows PCs Now (polygon.com)

dryriver writes: An impressive open source Playstation 3 emulator called RCPS3 (https://rpcs3.net/) has reached the point where almost 1,600 Playstation 3 games can be played emulated on Windows PCs at up to 10K UHD resolution now. PS3 games and model textures in particular look much sharper on PC in UHD than they did on the original PS3 console (sharpness demonstration video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...). The developers state that on an up to date gaming PC with a decent GPU, emulated PS3 games can be run at the full framerate of the original console version but at 4K UHD resolution. Development of the emulator and reverse engineering of the PS3's custom graphics hardware is still ongoing — a few of the game videos on the emulator's Youtube channel show small glitches like polygons flickering on and off in some games. But it appears that playing PS3 games emulated on non-Sony hardware may soon become as easy as playing, say, old Amiga or Nintendo games emulated already is today. This is an impressive feat considering that the PS3 hardware is far more complex and difficult to emulate fully than the much simpler hardware of older 16-bit computers and consoles.

Submission + - There Are Ajit Pai 'Verizon Puppet' Jokes That the FCC Doesn't Want You To Read (arstechnica.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Federal Communications Commission is refusing to release the draft versions of jokes told by Chairman Ajit Pai at a recent dinner, claiming that releasing the drafts would "impede the candid exchange of ideas" within the commission. In December, Pai gave a speech at the annual FCC Chairman's Dinner and played a video that attempts to lampoon critics who accuse Pai of doing the bidding of Verizon, his former employer. The video was shown less than a week before the FCC voted to repeal net neutrality rules, a favorable move for the broadband industry requested by Verizon and other ISPs. The satirical skit shows Pai planning his future ascension to the FCC chairmanship with Verizon executive Kathleen Grillo in 2003, the last year Pai worked as a Verizon lawyer. The video shows Pai and the Verizon executive plotting to install a "Verizon puppet" as FCC chair.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: What Is Missing In Tech Today?

dryriver writes: There is so much tech and gadget news pouring out of the internet every day that one might think "everything tech that is needed already exists". But of course people thought precisely this at various points in human history, and then completely new tools, technologies, processes, designs, devices and innovations came along soon after and changed everything. Sometimes the opposite also happens — tech that was really good for its day and used to exist is suddenly no longer available. Many people miss the very usable Psion palmtop computers with their foldout QWERTY keyboards, touch screen and styluses for example, or would have liked the Commodore Amiga with its innovative custom chips and OS to continue existing and evolving, or would have liked to be able to keep using software like Softimage XSI or Adobe Director that were suddenly discontinued. So here is the question: What tech, in your particular profession, industry, personal area of interest or scientific or academic field is currently "missing"? This can be tech that is needed but does not exist yet, whether hardware or software or some kind of mechanical device or some kind of process. Or tech that was available in the past, but was EOL'd or "End Of Lifed" and never came back in an updated or evolved form. Bonus question: If what you feel is "missing" could quite feasibly be engineered, produced and sold today at a profit, what do you think is the reason it isn't available?

Submission + - RPCS3, PS3 emulation on PC is real (kingofgng.com)

KingofGnG writes: Five years ago, the PlayStation 3 emulation promised by RPCS3 seemed like a dream still far away from becoming a reality. Indeed the aforementioned open source project had almost nothing interesting to say at least until the past year, but when the stars aligned and the reverse engineering-loving developers started to get serious everything changed. Nowadays RPCS3 can show that emulation of the powerful seventh generation Sony console is something real, a good number of games representing PS3’s rich software library is playable with no particular issues even though there is still a lot of work to do.

the OTS system mires workers in tasks that reduce how much time they can spend with customers rendering many of the requirements below counterproductive. The stress is made even worse by another Bezos-induced change, that of headcount cuts.

Part of the reason shoppers put up with Whole Foods high prices is a cheerful, well informed staff. Take that away and shoppers will take their business elsewhere.
