An anonymous reader writes: With radical changes in UI being thrust on users , the question naturally arises is unity better than Gnome3 ? Which work flow do you like ? How do they compare and which does the minimum disruption compared to good old gnome2

Submission + - The Modern Day Renaissance Man (discovermagazine.com)

Kilrah_il writes: Not Exactly Rocker Science has an interesting piece about Erez Lieberman Aiden, a scientist that is frequently hopping from one field to another, including "molecular biology, linguistics, physics, engineering and mathematics." This is in contrast to the prevailing trend of specializing in a specific field. "... I think a huge amount of invention is recognising that A and B go together really well, putting them together and getting something better. The limiting step is knowing that A and B exist. And that’s the big disadvantage that one has as a specialist – you gradually lose sight of the things that are around. I feel I just get to see more." Read on to see how failure to map antibodies led to an important discovery of the 3D folding of DNA and how the study of irregular verbs created a new scientific field.

Submission + - Communicating in a crisis (kingston.ac.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: In the aftermath of the London bombings mobile phones and radios stopped working making the already tricky rescue operation even more difficult. Now experts from Kingston University, London, have developed a solution to ensure breakdowns in communication are a thing of the past for emergency workers responding to disasters.

A team led by Dr Christos Politis has designed a sophisticated, internet-based technique to keep rescuers and their central control room in touch independently, rather than using central wireless access points or the TETRA police radio system. The app, which can be used on an i-pad or other personal digital assistant (PDAs), will also allow emergency service workers in the United Kingdom to talk to counterparts across Europe on a secure system.

Absolutely. Everyone is guilty of something, even those who maintain their righteousness and purity at every opportunity.

Just another stick that can be pulled out and used to beat you with when it suits them and ignored the rest of the time.

Whatever happened to our Constitutional protection from cruel and unjust punishments?

Is this the new War on Drugs or something?

er, I think you allowed successive elected representatives to gradually erode any form of constitutionality in the name of capitalism, which is now being protected by the big corporations who fear that their monopoly may be at risk.

Drugs and piracy are just bad ok, so please just accept what you are told, do what 'the man' says, be a good citizen and don't forget to inform on your neighbour if you think they are up to no good. They might be terrorists you know!

Submission + - March RSA Hack Hits Lockheed, Remote Systems Breac (pcmag.com)

CPE1704TKS writes: I guess we know what the first target of the RSA hackers were now: military secrets. Unfortunately, RSA's complete silence on the matter will only remove any shred of confidence people have in their product.

From the article:

"So how did the hackers do it? It's been speculated that hackers obtained master key files during the March RSA attacks—as implied, a hacker then would be able to penetrate a SecurID-protected network by replicating an individual's exact keys generated by the particular device."
