We had to do something similar in the mid 1980's because the 360 Assembler class used off-campus mainframes and didn't have a wired connection yet. Plus, they could only use the mainframes at night.
I wrote a 360 Assembler syntax checker in Pascal to catch bone-head syntax and naming errors to reduce the number of fix-it turn-arounds. I got a little award for it.
