Submission + - Vista file security < XP file security

Ksigpaul writes: Microsoft claims that Vista is a huge step forward in security, but one has to question this by some very deliberate choices between the Vista flavors. We all know the BitLocker(TM) technology is only available to Ultimate and Business users but what about EFS? Windows XP Professional has the EFS technology built in but you have to buy the 300+ Vista Ultimate just to be able to encrypt individual files in Vista. Can a community outcry or a couple of good articles from respected journalists essentially force Microsoft to include this for their Home Basic and Home Premium customers? Home customers have important files and are occassionaly burglarized or the victim of a laptop theft.

Submission + - Underwater Tank

pipingguy writes: "XK2, South Korea's latest "home-grown" battle tank was unveiled recently. With only 3 crewmembers, it looks like it depends on an autoloader system as the Russian designs typically do (the American Abrams, British Challenger 2 and German Leopard have a dedicated loader crewmember) and the "active defence system" sounds a lot like the Black Eagle."

Submission + - Symantec Releases Four Whitepapers Debunking Vista

kfed writes: Hot on the heals of research showing UAC in Vista could hide malware Symantec have now relesed four new whitepapers (two more to be released on Monday). The research is a mixture of high level fluff and more detailed technical analysis of certain technologies and their weaknesses. Symantec have given Vista mixed reviews, thumbs up in certain areas and down in others. If Symantec is engaging in competitive research one can only wonder what other MS competitors are up to.

Boosting Cell Phone Signals in Strange Places? 40

hedgemage asks: "I work at a retirement home and we have trouble with the cell phones that our nursing and maintenance staff use. The problem is that our nursing home area is built into a lower level that was originally constructed as a fallout shelter in 1960. There's a lot of solid concrete in the walls and ceiling. We have paid out tens of thousands to try and get an on-site mobile to work using NEC Dterm PSII phones, but they have proven absolutely unreliable (not just in the bomb shelter but throughout the campus) and the only solution our telecom provider has is to install several thousand dollars more in transceivers. If we could use ordinary cell phones, it would be ideal for everyone. Is there an off-the-shelf solution that could boost regular cellular signals in our bomb shelter?"

Wordpress 2.1.1 Release Compromised by Cracker 48

GrumpySimon writes "The recent 2.1.1 release of the popular blog software Wordpress was compromised by a cracker who made it easier for to execute code remotely. This is interesting because the official release was quietly and subtly compromised, and has been in the wild for a few days now. There's no word on if any affected sites have been compromised, but anyone running Wordpress is urged to upgrade to 2.1.2 immediately, and admins can check their logs for access to 'theme.php' or 'feed.php', and query strings with 'ix=' or 'iz=' in them."

Submission + - Compusa Worse off than Current Speculation

An anonymous reader writes: CompUSA is in Worse shape than they are letting on. What is known is that they are closing half of the US retail stores by the end of March. What is not commonly known is that CompUSA is going out of business, and intends to completely close by Christmas 2007.

It is a sad day, as CompUSA has been the springboard for many a technician to get into the industry.

The problem is complicated and will not be fixed as stated by CompUSA to the media thus far. Online retail has impacted the bottom line, but mismanagement, and lackluster decisions, as well as questionable business practices have made CompUSA a money-pit.

Employees of stores around the nation that have remained open have been warned that the store that they work at will be closed as well.

As quoted in Andy Patrizio's article 'Game Over For Retail', Brian Sozzi, research analyst for Wall Street Strategies, has this to say:

"They just haven't found that niche they can carve into. Why go to CompUSA when you can buy a computer and a TV at Best Buy?" he said. "I think it's just about the end for them. There's only so many stores you can cut for profits."

He doesn't know how right he is.
