Submission + - Apple drank the M$ cool-aid

The.arb writes: "If you do the iPod promo and try to use their on-line rebate form, http://www.apple.com/promo/rebate/ it allows you to enter free hand the date. If you use "07" rather than "2007" it will accept it on the page for entering the product, but when you try to submit the rebate, the MS Dot Net frame work chokes.

I find it interesting they are hosting on apple.com with M$ OS rather than what they try and say is OS X....

PS — From what I understand, Jobs doesn't return calls from fellow Millionaires at institutions, so why bother to inform them. I called their call center, but they have no clue on reporting such problems. Server Error in '/' Application.

Submission + - What will happen if Windows XP becomes free? 1

An anonymous reader writes: Now that Vista is out and MS is putting all of its efforts behind their new OS, do you think Microsoft will gain or lose by distributing Windows XP for free? What will happen to Linux distros intended for the desktop? Assuming MS will charge only for support services to their older products and free even the Windows 2000 server, I think this can be a pretty big blow to its competitors, but not such a big financial fall. Thoughts anyone?

Submission + - Vista set for 2008 servicing

Robert writes: With many businesses wary of deploying Windows Vista on their networks prior to the release of Service Pack 1, Microsoft has tried to end the speculation about what SP1 will comprise and when it will be available. Vista SP1, likely to be released to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008, will not be as significant a feature release as Windows last major operating system service pack, Windows XP SP2, the company indicated in a set of press releases and blog postings.

MTV Bails on Microsoft's URGE Store 144

Marlowe writes "MTV's once-ballyhooed partnership with Microsoft appears to be all but dead. MTV is teaming up with RealNetworks to form Rhapsody America, with Verizon handling wireless distribution. It's a big blow to Microsoft, too. 'With the creation of Rhapsody America, the writing is on the wall for MTV and Microsoft's Urge music store partnership. Although the Microsoft-MTV marriage was announced with great fanfare, it was likely headed for divorce court right from the start due to Microsoft's plans to turn PlaysForSure into a second-class citizen with the launch of the Zune — and its self-contained music ecosystem.' When asked about the future of Urge, MTV Music Group President Toffler was terse. 'We are in discussions with Microsoft now and will be on Windows Media Player 11 until further notice,' he said. While the Urge brand will ultimately disappear, Toffler said that 'a lot' of Urge's elements will live on in Rhapsody America."

Submission + - Evil Vista makes Orson Scott Card switch to Linux

LucidLion writes: The award winning author of Ender's Game declares 'Vista itself is so evil that I find myself infuriated continuously.' From the article:

I did not need Vista. Nobody needed Vista. Anything Vista does that XP did not do that is worth doing was available from third-party software. But Vista does lots of things that I don't want it to do. Like crash more. Refuse to run existing software of mine. Slow down every task I want to do. Lock me out of control of my own computer.

So I'm fed up. I'm getting Linux. Microsoft's arrogant incompetence has finally brought me to the point of no return. So what if Linux can't run as much software? Vista already doesn't run my software! It won't be a downgrade in service!
How can Microsoft recover from the animosity its OS is generating?

Submission + - Scam autopsy: EBay auction phishing (kelvinwong.ca)

brainhum writes: "Unlike the email-based scams most of us get everyday, this phishing attack starts as an authentic eBay auction. Loading the auction page (which is served by eBay) causes an embedded Flash object to redirect you to the scammer-controlled page. A low-priced 'Buy it now' auction provides incentive to submit credentials to the phishing site. This is a short blog article on it with screen caps. Mirrored here as well."

Submission + - Travelocity Fined $182K for Allowing Trips to Cuba

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "For the first time, an online travel agency has been fined for booking trips between the U.S. and Cuba, in violation of a United States embargo. Travelocity paid federal regulators $182,750 this month to settle a complaint brought by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which said the company violated the prohibition nearly 1,500 times between January 1998 and April 2004. The complaint alleged that Travelocity "provided travel-related services in which Cuba or Cuban nationals had an interest by arranging air travel and hotel reservations to, from, with or within Cuba without an OFAC license.""

Submission + - Vermonters Risk it all for iPhone (burlingtonfreepress.com)

bkinney writes: "Historically, Vermonters are known for their independence and tendency to be downright ornery. Presently, Vermonters are pretty much the same, but wield flashy gadgets instead of farm tools. It seems that a brave bunch of Apple lovers are risking the wrath of AT&T by purchasing and then (gasp!) activating their iPhones in the Green Mountain State. The problem? AT&T doesn't provide service in Vermont and is threatening termination and possible legal action against this pack of tech rebels. Submission + - AllOfMp3.com acquitted. RIAA demands pricefixing?

DataBroker writes: http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/biztech/08/15/russia. site.reut/index.html

A Russian court found the former boss of music download Web site www.allofmp3.com not guilty of breaching copyright on Wednesday in a case considered a crucial test of Russia's commitment to fighting piracy.

Denis Kvasov, head of MediaServices which owned the site, always said he was within the law because the site paid part of its income to ROMS, a Russian organisation which collects and distributes fees for copyright holders. The court has agreed, stating "Everybody who uses soundtracks has to pay a certain amount of their income to the rights holders and this company has done that," she said. "MediaServices has paid a certain amount of money to ROMS."

In short, the court says "a certain amount of their income" is proper and legal. By the prosecution appealing, are they really complaining that AllOfMp3 isn't cooperating with the monopolistic price-fixing? The guise of "protecting intellectual property rights" is looking thin when the court is agreeing with the defense.

Submission + - E-cards: Who bothers (or dares) to open them? 1

netbuzz writes: "Seems not a day goes by lately without a fresh news report of some new virus traversing the 'Net via bogus e-cards. And there's no doubt that these electronic annoyances are finding their way their way past spam filters in ever greater numbers. Which begs the question: Does anyone bother to separate the lone legit e-card from Mom out of the pile of spam and booby traps? Does anyone bother to open these things at all anymore? ... The e-card companies don't seem anxious to talk about the matter.

Submission + - US Air Force refuels with robo-pilots

Stony Stevenson writes: The US Air Force has revealed it has built a software program which it claims can fly a plane during an inflight refuelling as well as a human pilot.

Autonomous Airborne Refueling software uses inertial, GPS and video data to manoeuvre the plane's refuelling pipes into a 32-in basket. The software was 100 per cent successful, even in conditions which a human pilot would have found almost impossible. A human pilot was on board just in case.

Submission + - Caffeine helps improve Memory

techiemikey writes: Recent findings have found that caffeine can help improve memory but only in women, and more prominantly in women over the age of 65. It seems the caffeine helps prevent the loss of brain cells, but it apparently does nothing in regards to preventing dementia. On why only women are affected, one person reported that women may be "more sensitive to the effects of caffeine.... Their bodies may react differently to the stimulant, or they may metabolize caffeine differently."

Submission + - Lenovo to sell, support SLED on ThinkPads (arstechnica.com)

Pengo writes: Lenovo has announced that they will begin selling T-series ThinkPads with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 preinstalled beginning sometime during the fourth quarter. In addition to supplying the hardware support, Lenovo will also handle OS support for ThinkPad customers, with Novell providing software updates. 'Unlike Dell, which has targeted its Linux offering primarily at the enthusiast community, Lenovo's SLED laptops are targeted at the enterprise. Whether they are running Ubuntu, SLED, or some other distribution, the availability of Linux preinstallation from mainstream vendors increases the visibility of the operating system and gives component makers an incentive to provide better Linux drivers and hardware support. If Lenovo is willing to collaborate with the Linux development community to improve the Linux laptop user experience, it will be a big win for all Linux users, not just the ones who buy laptops from Lenovo.'

It includes how to use the 14 built-in systems-management areas, how preferences interact, how to secure workstations and help users access resources including applications and printers. It's a must-read for any systems admin working in a Mac or mixed environment. Written by Ryan Faas, this is a follow-up to his popular "Inside Apple's Workgroup Manager." "
