Submission + - Shenzhen Apec Electronics Brings x86 Stick PC (techreport.com)

jones_supa writes: We have seen plenty of Android-based "stick computers" equipped with an ARM CPU, but a Chinese vendor called Shenzhen Apec Electronics has now started offering a honest-to-goodness x86-64 computer harnessing the same form factor. The APM-D01 is built around the Intel Bay Trail platform providing a low-power quad core Atom CPU and 1GB or 2GB of RAM. Inside can also be found 16GB or 32GB of internal flash storage, HDMI video, MicroSD slot, two USB 2.0 ports, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. The miniature PC can run Android, Windows 8.1, and Linux. Some further arrangements are needed for the supply chain, as for now the device has been spotted only on Alibaba in 500-unit quantities targeted for resellers.

Submission + - Ask slashdot: Can I has a good hosting service? (arvixe.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Uhh.. Ok, bear with me now. I know this is not PC Mag 2014 review of hosting services. I am thinking of getting a parody website up. I am mildly concerned about potential reaction of the parodee, who has been known to be a little heavy handed when it comes to things like that. In short, I want to make sure that the hosting company won't flake out just because of potential complaints. I checked some companies and their TOS and AUPs all seem to have weird ass restrictions ( Arvixe, for example, has a list of unacceptable material that happens to list RPGs and MUDS ).

I live in US. Parodee in Poland.

Submission + - Mixing Agile with Waterfall for Code Quality

jones_supa writes: The 2014 CAST Research on Application Software Health (CRASH) report states that enterprise software built using a mixture of agile and waterfall methods will result in more robust and secure applications than those built using either agile or waterfall methods alone. Data from CAST's Appmarq benchmarking repository was analyzed to discover global trends in the structural quality of business application software. The report explores the impact of factors such as development method, CMMI maturity level, outsourcing, and other practices on software quality characteristics that are based upon good architectural and coding practices. InfoQ interviewed Bill Curtis, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist at CAST, about the research done by CAST, structural quality factors, and mixing agile and waterfall methods.

Submission + - South Korean ID system to be rebuilt from scratch after massive leaks

AmiMoJo writes: South Korea's national identity card system may need a complete overhaul following huge data thefts dating back to 2004. The government is considering issuing new ID numbers to every citizen aged over 17, costing billions of dollars. The ID numbers and personal details of an estimated 80% of the country's 50 million people have been stolen from banks and other targets. Some 20 million people, including the president Park Geun-hye, have been victims of a data theft. Citizens are unable to change their credentials, which are used in many different sectors, making them an attractive target for hackers.

It's not only about effectiveness but about treating other people with respect.

"On the Internet, nobody can hear you being subtle."

Excuses, excuses. One can easily be heard and still be professional if he wants to. Linux alone is so cool and influential that the leader of the project will certainly get noticed even without peppering everything with insults and cursing.

Submission + - Multiple Vulnerabilities in Firefox and Thunderbird Patched

jones_supa writes: The Mozilla Foundation has released security updates to address multiple serious vulnerabilities in Firefox and Thunderbird. Exploitation of these vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to obtain sensitive information, bypass same-origin policy and key pinning, cause an exploitable crash, conduct a man-in-the-middle attack, or execute arbitrary code. MS-ISAC provides a detailed list of the bugs. The fixed versions are Firefox 33, Firefox ESR 31.2 and Thunderbird 31.2.
