Criminal Charges Filed Against AT&T iPad Attacker 122

Batblue writes "The US Department of Justice will file criminal charges against the alleged attackers who copied personal information from the AT&T network of approximately 120,000 iPad users, the US Attorney's Office, District of New Jersey announced Monday. Daniel Spitler will be charged in US District Court in New Jersey with one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization and one count of fraud. Andrew Auernheimer will be charged with the same counts at the US Western District Court of Arkansas, which is in Fayetteville. Auernheimer made headlines last June when he discovered that AT&T's website was disclosing the e-mail addresses and the unique ICC-ID numbers of multiple iPad owners. Claiming that he wanted to help AT&T improve its security, he wrote a computer script to extract the data from AT&T and then went public with the information. AT&T said that nobody from Auernheimer's hacking group contacted them about the flaw."

Texas Supreme Court Cites Mr. Spock 345

An anonymous reader writes "We always knew that Spock was wise and would probably make a pretty good judge, so perhaps it's a good thing to see the Texas Supreme Court citing Spock in a recent ruling, noting his wisdom in stating that 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.'"

It's the sound of the copyright lobby having another heart attack.

When will the governments of the world finally say "Enough is enough" to these clowns?

It's not like all this litigation and threats are profitable or anything. I believe /. had an article on the fact that RIAA spent $16m to recover $391,000 in 2008. It was worse in 2007, when they spent $21m and only recovered $516,000. I know it's been all over the place at various points. Add in the frivolous lawsuits, DDoS attacks and harassment of uninvolved individuals, and the whole copyright lobby looks like an organized crime syndicate.

UK Anti-Piracy Firm E-mails Reveal Cavalier Attitude Toward Legal Threats 200

Khyber writes "A recent DDoS attack against a UK-based anti-pirating firm, ACS:Law, has resulted in a large backup archive of the server contents being made available for download, [and this archive] is now being hosted by the Pirate Bay. Within this archive are e-mails from Andrew Crossley basically admitting that he is running a scam job, sending out thousands of frivolous legal threats on the premise that a percentage pay up immediately to avoid legal hassles."

Submission + - Modern Warfare 2 shock: No servers or mods for PC (on.net) 2

An anonymous reader writes: Call of Duty community manager Rob Bowling, also known as 'fourzerotwo', has confirmed in a podcast that the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not support user-created mods. Worse, it will not support dedicated servers. PC gamers will have to suffer peer-to-peer connections, just like their console-owning cousins.

Mr. Bowling could offer no defence for this move, and simply stated that: "The team's focusing on having it very equal on every platform" and "We're doing a lot of work on the back end."

Previous PC versions of CoD have supported dedicated servers. Their absence will apparently make the game "much more accessible to the PC community as a whole."

You can listen to the podcast here; skip forward to around the 1:41 mark for the awful truth...

No dedicated server = dead game.

It didn't work for Pariah and it didn't work for OFP:DR, so what makes IW/Activision think it'll work for them?!?

By the way, this has hit just about every gaming news site and it's been almost a total uproar by the PC gaming community. Almost 50k people have signed a petition in under 48 hours, and many have followed through by canceling their preorders for CoD:MW2 for PC.

Submission + - Quebec doctors want euthenasia legalized. (www.cbc.ca)

tomhudson writes: "Earlier today, the Quebec federation of medical specialists released a poll that found that, not only did 75% of all doctors want euthanasia legalized, but that the vast majority of specialists already practice it.

"The president of the federation of medical specialists, Dr. Gaetan Barrette, said doctors already see some form of euthanasia in the course of their work. "Eighty one per cent of doctors do see the practice of euthanasia given the circumstances in their practice," Barrette said. "They hear their patients, they see their patients, asking for it."

Barrette says the debate over euthanasia is similar to the one 20 years surrounding legal access to abortion. A recent Angus Reid poll found that 77 per cent of Quebecers support the move to legalize euthanasia.

In TV interviews, Barrette said that the most frequent request by families currently is cessation of treatment and the administration of lots of sedatives. Seeing as this has been going on for at least 20 years, we really do need to put in a legal framework that protects both the doctor and the patient."
