Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Where on the Internet do you go for accurate News & Informatio 1

dryriver writes: Hello Slashdotters! One of the things that defines us as "nerds" is a hardwired impulse to seek out information about various things that is as "truthful", "objective" or "accurate" and "complete" as possible. Nerds like proven facts. Nerds like strong analysis. Nerds like accurate information. Nerds like to see "the objective truth" written large, without any needless hype, FUD or other BS. The more "truthful" the news sources we peruse are, the more we value them. So here is my question to you all: Where on the internet — aside from Slashdot — do you go to get good information on various things, from political news to technology news to — say — economic analysis and foreign policy coverage? What are your favorite websites for becoming — and staying — "well informed", and why? (You can list as many site URLs as you see fit). Hopefully, if enough of us contribute to this list, we will all become better informed and perhaps discover many new, useful websites that we didn't even know were out there!

Submission + - Supreme Court Unanimously Rules Human Genes Unpatentable 1

the eric conspiracy writes: In a landmark decision the Supreme Court ruled that that mere act of extracting genetic material from the human body does not result in patentable material. However they did rule that synthetic derivatives of DNA can be patented. Known as complementary DNA or cDNA these derivative are essentially stripped down forms of the original DNA.

The result for Myriad is that they still have protection for their test, however the decision also allows researchers to work with the DNA sequences that are predecessors to the cDNA used in the test.

Comment Police Privacy (Score 1) 309

I'm all for 2 way accountability, but there may actually be times when they should be turned off. Do we really want to see/listen to some cop using the restroom? Chomping on food during his lunch break?

And what about the times when you may not want conversations with coworkers to be posted publicly? Telling a coworker an off-color joke? Telling a coworker what he did with that lady he met at the bar the other night? Telling the boss he will be out on Friday to help a family member with a medical issue?

And how long before this footage is directly used to make hiring/promotion/firing decisions? Didn't pick up on a clue quick enough on that high profile case? No raise for you.

This issue is who determines when it is on or off, and how to avoid this power being used inappropriately.

This reminds me of Netscape near the end. It was still around for years after the masses stopped using it, but was essentially a rebreanded version of mozilla/firefox. The trouble is it took them a few months to put their touch on it.

I'm curious how this would work well for Opera, if their business plan involves always reacting to the work of others in a world of nearly continuous browser updates. Sounds a day late and a dollar short to me.

Exactly. Building operators are not on site 24/7. You get an automated email/text message when a boiler is in alarm or a chiller goes down. Pull up the controls system from any browser on your PC or phone, use your login/password and see what is going on. You may even be able to fix the issue remotely. No need to run across campus when you get a phone call or come in at 3AM if all a piece of equipment needs is the reset button.

Submission + - EA selected for multi-year agreement for the future of Star Wars gaming

Nrrqshrr writes: Despite winning the title of the Worst Company in America twice, Disney Interactive and Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today a multi-year agreement for future Star Wars games.
EA will mainly develop Star Wars games for consoles and PC, while Disney will focus on developing for tablets and mobile devices, as well as social games.

Submission + - Bill Gates: iPad users are frustrated they can't type or create documents (tuaw.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: While Apple views the tablet and PC markets as two separate entities, Microsoft takes the opposing view.

During a CNBC interview this morning, Gates continued to toe the party line insofar as he praised the benefits of Microsoft's tablets and Windows 8 while explaining that iPad users are frustrated because they have trouble typing and creating documents.

"With Windows 8, Microsoft is trying to gain share in what has been dominated by the iPad-type device. But a lot of those users are frustrated, they can't type, they can't create documents. They don't have Office there. So we're providing them something with the benefits they've seen that have made that a big category, but without giving up what they expect in a PC."

Comment Chrome Window Focus (Score 1) 155

I just wish they would let diverted links (from outlook, RSS Readers, etc) open in chrome with the program itself remaining in the background. It is common for me to use an RSS reader, click on a dozen or so links, and then flip over to the browser and read them one by one. Now I have to flip back to the RSS reader after I click each link because chrome jumps to the foreground. It was even more annoying when these noisy tabs start talking in the background while reading other stuff before I installed flashblock. To me this is my biggest wish for chrome, especially since I could do this in FF probably 5+ years ago.

Submission + - AutoDesk Accuses Non-profit User Forums of Trademark Infringement (revitforum.org)

SrLnclt writes: AutoDesk has begun contacting owners of websites with Revit in their TLD name, and accusing them of trademark infringement. For those unfamiliar with this software package, Revit is a 3D modeling tool designed to model buildings and their MEP and Structural systems, which is currently owned by AutoDesk. It is widely used by architects and engineers for this purpose, and has supplanted AutoCAD in the building design fields for many users. One such domain revitforum.org is an independent non-profit, user to user support forum. Typically users on this site are already familiar with Revit, have purchased licenses, and are looking for help, tips, or tricks in using the software. One of AutoDesk's lawyers has contacted [PDF, Registration Required] the site owner, who has responded [PDF, Registration Required] and plans on fighting this issue. Comment Indoor vs. Outdoor Conditions (Score 1) 129

Typical indoor HVAC design conditions: Summer - 75F / 50% RH, Winter - 70F / 30% RH. So indoors I would think the virus would survive well year round, just better during winter.

Outdoors the air temperature might swing 20-30F between the day and night. This is going to swing the RH levels in an even wider range - maybe between 20% and 80% depending on season, time of day, local climate etc.

I would think the virus survival would correlate better with time periods when there isn't much change in the outdoor air temperature/humidity levels for several days during winter, rather than anything with indoor conditions.
