Actually, I thing the

bent of mind that makes for a successful programmer

is quite similar to that required to successfully create a proof in mathematics. Both mathematical proofs and computer programs can be either hack jobs or works of elegance, or anywhere in between. I think it's safe to say that my efforts in both areas tend toward the former.

Didn't RTFA, but I did read the summary, and it's a bit ironic. The reason I bought my first computer (an Apple ][+ system) was because I wanted everything on a computer that I controlled. And I still wonder if using a cloud-based email service (gmail) is a smart thing to do.

No buzzwordifiers were used to create that statement. It's actually quite straight-forward and descriptive. What surprises me is that new minerals are still being discovered in the Allende meteroite, given how much its been studied over the last 40+ years.

Submission + - IBM Selling THINK iPad2 Cases for $80

theodp writes: Big Blue may have given up on making PCs or tablets, but @IBM is proudly tweeting about their latest product launch — a $79.99 THINK iPad2 Case that's actually manufactured by DODOcase and sold through ShopIBM by Staples Promotional Products. So, let's get this straight: On IBM's Smarter Planet, you'll pay three companies $80 for a case for your $399 iPad2 instead of just forking over $39 to Apple for a Smart Cover? Might want to re-THINK that!

My second grade teacher convinced me I could do algebra using essentially this example:
. Teacher: How much is 1+1?
Class: 2
Teacher: if 1+x = 2, what's x?
Class: 1
Teacher: You're doing algebra.
I was convinced. It wasn't until I hit my undergraduate group theory class that I started thinking maybe I can't really do algebra (but I repeated the class, group theory, that is, and convinced myself I really could do it)
