by "slowly phase out," i mean each individual browser (for now just chrome & derivatives) will make the decision on their own time when to remove the webkit tag. probably when blink and webkit have diverged significantly.

I imagine most browsers will start sending a UA with both blink & webkit and then slowly phase out the webkit token.

It is possible to be employed by a company and do android development. Making your own 99ct apps is not the only way to make a living.

I'm not sure it is. Maybe I'm biased because I am employed as an Android developer, but both Android and iOS developers are both incredibly in demand right now. Every brand wants or has an app, and every webapp needs a native mobile counterpart to be taken seriously. Weren't the app bubble predictions back in 2010? I don't think they hold any water any more. Mobile is the future and isn't going anywhere.

Real time regional interactions as well as the global economy is also run through the server. If it was really just the nominal amount of work of syncing saved games, I would really worry about EA's server programming. At the moment, I only slightly worry about it.

I played for the couple of hours I could, last night. Even if you control all the cities in a region yourself, there is still a global market that is being interacted with. When the server was having connection problems (but would still let you play), the oil that I was exporting would no longer export and sit in the stockpile until I was alerted it was full. This was affecting my overall economy, because as an oil town, a lot of my economy was dependent on that global export. The market prices are determined by overall supply/demand on the particular server you're connected to (each server being a sim globe as it were). As others have pointed out, this is of course something that didn't have to be multiplayer, but does add an additional interesting variable to the game. Here's a screenshot of the market graph.
