Bomarc writes: "KOMO has an article by the AP about HD DVD; more about the wars and how HD DVD is fiting back. One key part of the article is: The HD DVD version of "300" will allow users to re-edit the movie, selecting and ordering the scenes as they see fit, and upload their edit to a server hosted by the studio, Warner Bros. The edit will be accessible to other users, who can download it to their players and see the movie in its new form.

Ability do download it to others??? What is the world coming to will? The MPAA allow this?"

Submission + - 33% of the XBox 360 are defective? (dailytech.com)

sodul writes: DailyTech has contacted several retailers to get the actual percentage of XBox failures. While Microsoft is claiming a 'normal' 3% rate, the retailers claim that one third of the XBox are breaking. This is the highest failure rate ever witnessed by the retailers while the other consoles like the PS3 have a less than 1% failure rate. This could explain The Man Who Went Through 11 Xbox 360s.

Submission + - Enable Vista Glass on Intel GMA 950 Graphics Cards (pctipsbox.com)

pcripsbox writes: "Currently Windows Vista does not have WDDM support for the Intel GMA950 integrated graphics card. Even though this card is integrated, it supports all of the requirements for Vista Glass. It is just a matter of getting a driver that is compatible with it and vista.

After doing a ton of research, I found that there is another driver that you can actually use for now. There are some problems with it, such if you have a laptop, the external monitor port does not always work but other than that it works great for me on my Lenovo X60.

This is how I got Vista Glass to run on a GMA950:

First, I had to open up device manager. Click on the start menu and type in devmgmt.msc and Enter to load it up.
Once there, expand the Display Adapters section and right click on each device and select Uninstall.
Reboot the computer.
When it restarts, it should install a generic video driver so your screen will still work.
Go back into Device Manager, expand the Display Adapters section again and then right click on the device and select Update Driver.
This time select Browse My Computer for Driver and then Let me pick it from a list.
Go the the Intel section and select the Intel(R) Lakeport Graphics Controller.
Hit OK and install the new driver. Restart your computer.
Once you have rebooted, right click on your desktop and select Personalize again.
Click on Windows Colors and Appearance.
Click on Open classic appearance properties for more color options.
In the Color Scheme box, select Windows Vista Aero.
Hit OK and glass will now load.
If glass does not work for you, go back to Device Manager and ensure the new display driver is working. You may have to update your system BIOS version. I had to update the BIOS version on the X60 in order for the new driver to work."

gkhan1 writes: Google's acquisition of DoubleClick has been hotly debated, and now Google has put up a blog post explaining their decision

If you're an expert, please bear with me, as some of what follows will seem elementary to those already familiar with the online advertising world. If you're not, I hope this gives you a better understanding of how advertisers, publishers, ad serving companies, agencies and other companies such as Google all fit into this exciting new mix.

Submission + - Weather Balloon My A** 1

xnuandax writes: "A serious blow has been dealt to the conspiracy theory that aliens didn't in fact visit us at Roswell, New Mexico 60 years ago. It appears that late Army Lt. Walter Haut had signed a sealed affidavit prior to his death last year asserting that he had indeed witnessed the wreckage of an egg-shaped craft and its extraterrestrial crew whilst working at the Roswell Army Air Field. This news article reviews how Haut had worked as public relations officer for the Roswell base and was involved in the original "weather balloon" explanation of events at the time. This recent evidence would seem to confirm speculation that egg-shaped saucers are notoriously difficult to fly safely at low altitude."

Submission + - Music Industry Attacks Papers For Free Prince CD (guardian.co.uk)

im just cannonfodder writes: ""Prince is giving away a free CD in a national British newspaper The Mail & to anyone going to his concerts. The music retail industry executives are viewing this as an attack and are threatening to 'retaliate'. 'The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behavior like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores. And I say that to all the other artists who may be tempted to dally with the Mail on Sunday,' said Entertainment Retailers Association spokesman Paul Quirk. Mr Quirk also said it would be 'an insult' to record stores. Obviously the music industry views anything that doesn't result in a sale to be subversive or unfair. I say it's Prince's music and he can bloody well give it away if he wants to."

Submission + - Sun spot activity at a 1,000 year high

Burnhard writes: A new analysis shows that the Sun is more active now than it has been at anytime in the previous 1,000 years. Scientists based at the Institute for Astronomy in Zurich used ice cores from Greenland to construct a picture of our star's activity in the past. They say that over the last century the number of sunspots rose at the same time that the Earth's climate became steadily warmer.

Submission + - Compressed Air Car

FridayBob writes: Yesterday, a Belgian newspaper published this article (translation) about a new car that runs on nothing but compressed air. Apparently, it can run for about 200km on a tank of air filled up to a pressure of 300 bar (4351 psi). Special filling stations can refill an empty tank in only 3 minutes, but the car can also refill itself in six hours using an electrical outlet and its own on-board compressor. The car was developed by MDI (lots of info), a company set up by French engineer, Guy Nègre (ex-Formula One), that makes its money by selling patents and manufacturing licenses. It will become available in Belgium some time next year for a minimum price of only EUR 4,000 ($5,402). The Indian company, Tata, have also bought a manufacturing license and plan to sell a model for as little as EUR 1,835 ($2,478). This Wikipedia article has some interesting information regarding the air engine. Until a good enough battery appears with which to run an electric car, this seems like an excellent solution.

Submission + - Up to 40 million Mastercards compromised by theft (securityfocus.com) 2

John3 writes: "Mastercard announced that at least 68,000 and possibly as many as 40 million Mastercard accounts were compromised by a security breach at Cardsystems Solutions. Cardsystems Solutions has been in trouble before due to security breaches, so one would have hoped that they would have beefed up security. I received a replacement Mastercard yesterday in the mail (with a totally new account number) due to this security breach, and a number of customers shopping at my hardware store today commented that they also received new Mastercards. Anyone else receive a replacement Mastercard in the past few days and how much is this breach costing the banks (and ultimately the cardholders)?"

100x Faster Hard Drive In Lab 180

Gary lets us know about research out of the Netherlands that has succeeded in reading and writing a hard disk using polarized laser light. The researchers claim this offers a 100-times speedup over reading/writing using magnets. People have been trying for years to write data using polarized light; the secret of the current work's success lies in its disk's materials — gadolinium, iron, and cobalt. Working prototype drives should be available within a decade.
