Comment Re:Alternate Bank of Canada Press Release (Score 1) 223

The Bank of Canada wishes to inform Star Trek fans that while they may live long, they may not prosper if other parties refuse to accept defaced $5 bills.

Whoops, is that legal? In the U.S. you cannot decline payment made in cash (if you normally take cash). But it's also illegal to deface money.
But if it's not illegal to Spock a 5-spot in Canada that makes the bills legal currency still.

I read this story on the BBC site yesterday, and the title of the story was 'Spocking' not illegal, Canada Says at the time. It even still appears on Google search with that title. But now the headline has been changed to Bank spokesman says writing on bills "inappropriate".

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a blu-ray player that has that ability? There are certain makes available in the U.S (I'm going to assume you're in the U.S.) that have hidden player settings menus to control BD region specification. It's not possible to get a true "region free" (it plays everything) player, you'll have to change the player whenever you go from discs from one region to another. But at a cost of $50-$100 it's affordable to buy it as a second BD player to set to your favorite secondary region that you have many titles from, and much cheaper than importing a normal player from the region you want.

The camera diddled the image, maybe it was diddled even more before we actually saw it. Then we're all amazed that it doesn't look like the thing. But people have accidentally been taking pictures of things which don't look like things since time immemorial. They're called shitty pictures.

This is what happens when publications fire their professional photographers and give their "reporters" (who skill-wise are glorified bloggers now) smartphones and tell them to take their own pictures, because that's much cheaper than hiring real pros. The sad part is they probably think this is all great. After all, they're getting a lot more page views over this stupid photo controversy than a properly taken picture of the dress would have attracted to their site.

Always good to remember a venerability is a venerability, but a trojan is a trojan.

  - People buying legitimate blu-ray titles are not going to have this issue.
  - Even people downloading pirated content are not going to have this issue... as long as they are downloading just video files and not trying to pirate the entire disc with menus.
