While I got modded down for saying it is dangerous here as this is a pro nuclear site there are areas near the plant where the radiation is 100x as high as other parts of the zone. Trees to this day show genetic aberrations in areas near the plant regardless of the thriving ecosystem developing in the nearbye Ukrainian city.

Safe to visit the abandoned city of Prypiat but I would not want to live there and drink the water, get near the plant, or risk having dust on a windy day get near my face or food.

Submission + - Disgraced Scientist is Selling His Nobel Prize

HughPickens.com writes: Nicholas St. Fleur writes at The Atlantic that in the sad final chapter to a career that traces back to racist remarks he made in 2007, James Watson, the famed molecular biologist and co-discoverer of DNA, is putting his Nobel Prize up for auction, the first Nobel laureate in history to do so. Watson, best known for his work deciphering the DNA double helix alongside Francis Crick in 1953, made an incendiary remark regarding the intelligence of black people that lost him the admiration of the scientific community in 2007 making him, in his own words, an "unperson". That year, The Sunday Times quoted Watson as saying that he felt “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours—whereas all the testing says not really.” Watson added that although some think that all humans are born equally intelligent, “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true.” Watson has a history of making racist and sexist declarations, according to Time. His insensitive off-the-cuff remarks include saying that sunlight and dark skin contribute to “Latin lover” libido, and that fat people lack ambition, which prevents them from being hired. At a science conference in 2012, Watson said of women in science, “I think having all these women around makes it more fun for the men but they’re probably less effective.” To many scientists his gravest offense was not crediting Rosalind Franklin with helping him deduce the structure of DNA.

Watson is selling his prized medallion because he has no income outside of academia, even though for years he had served on many corporate boards. The gold medal is expected to bring in between $2.5 million and $3.5 million when it goes to auction. Watson says that he will use the money to purchase art and make donations to institutions that have supported him, such as the University of Chicago and Watson says the auction will also offer him the chance to “re-enter public life.” “I’ve had a unique life that’s allowed me to do things. I was set back. It was stupid on my part,” says Watson “All you can do is nothing, except hope that people actually know what you are.”

You think (l)users are annoying as helpdesk or desktop support? Wait til they make unreasonable demands, bash you, attack you and your team, and promise customers things without your knowledge that you can not possibly deliver and then hold you accountable when it fails while they take a bonus?

That folks sounds like hell but is management 101. Granted I have incompetent managers at my company (I was probably one of them due to me being demoted) but it is all bullshit, soothing hotheads, and looking like you got your shit together when you don't.

If you have aspergers or some mild social disorder like a lot do in IT then management is not for you as it requires a whole different skill sets. If you are fast talking salesmen who knows jack about IT then you can be a great IT manager as your job is not to get yourself and your team fired.

I had literally nightmares about work 5 nights a week and woke up at multiple times in the night to check email on my phone. I could not tell someone else please include me in that meeting and no this can not be done by X as you waited until the last minute and a lack of planning on yoru part should never be an emergency on my part. That line got me demoted as I had to move 4 companies and set VLANs and several hundred pcs when the wiring was not even fucking in yet in 3 days. ... end rant.

Programming managers have this too when sales promise a product features that do not exist and they get a slap on the back for a good job and a bonus and the IT manager is threatened with termination if 6 months worth of work is not done in 2 weeks etc.

I would even go on to say of all management IT management is the worst out there besides restaurant.

I read about people using raspberry pies for hpc. I would get a low end AMD or atom in a tiny mtx case with 2 ssds or a esata one where you can hide the drives behind. Sexy, slim, and quiet.

Integrated graphics on latest atom are 4000 which is fine for video. AMD can run games too.

People yack about 4k being the second coming of Christ but you need a $1000 video card to play games with half the settings off and compatibility problems. Lets hope Windows 10 and Wayland address this. For me it will be a few years before I change.

Also dropbox and MS Onedrive built into Windows 8.1 both offer 1 TB of cloud storage too. This will decrease demand for consumers.

We are nerds and not typical users but even I have a similar setup ... well with a cloud for extra backup in my case. I have 1 TB for my profiles and backup data. 2 ssds in raid 0 for OS and virtual machines and some games. Increasing storage space for a mechanical disk to me is like trying to sell me yet a larger tape drive.

My prediction is hard disks will turn into tape drives of today for backups and long term storage. SSDs are the wave of the future. My prediction also is many Walmart pc wil use disks for years to come due to OEMs being greedy about costs and not value. Joes who do not know what an SSD is will like the bigger storage in the specs and cheaper price not knowing it will significantly slow him down. SSDs I see now are much faster and are limited in storage but already there for a lot of people. ... and please do not give your niche use case in a reply. Not to mention the grandparent has a backward idea of reliability too. Though the very newest SSDs are significantly more reliable you can ask any shop owner what he thinks of SSDs. I have a raid with some SSD's on the system I am typing this on but I have my swap and personal data/profile on a mechanical disk still for this reason

Keep in mind I have not written java code for a long time now. But there was a method to check I think in java.lang somewhere.

Want to know why these apps failed? They used RMI to bypass the platform and use win32 apis to go check strings in c:\program files\jre etc or they use WMI to check the owner of the copyright. Instead of using a =, the incompetent programmers used an "==" and would call a break writeln (This program requires java 1.4.2 to run etc)

This was terrible and a ton more work not to mention broke compatibility with Linux and MacOSX for no reason at all?? My guess is these were corporate crap anyway that sent IE 6 specific CSS for these web apps anyway.

It is what you get when you go H1B1 visa holders.

My point is you would be shocked at all the garbage that goes and yes I can see poorly written MFC apps written in VC+ 4.2 doing a string check for Windows 9.x and printing out "Upgrade to Windows2000 Please!". If it happened in Java I am sure it can happen elsewhere
