Submission + - Parallels Adds 3D Support to Windows on Mac (fundraw.com)

gbulmash writes: "Parallels sent out a pre-order notice for the 3.0 version of their virtualization software for running Windows on Intel Macs. In the e-mail, they note that the 3.0 version will support 3D graphics, and in the v3.0 upgrade info sheet, they state the new version offers "3D graphics support to play the hottest games and run the most popular applications." If it lives up to the marketing... woo hoo!"

Submission + - Can Linus Torvalds Sing?

gbulmash writes: "In my discussions with anti-copyright activists, I have asked what business models would replace those powered by copyright to provide creators with financial incentive to create. Four came up most often: donations, ad revenues, sponsorships, and product placement. I don't include subscription, because paying a subscription fee for the exact same product you can get for free through another channel is technically a donation.

Well, the proof is in the pudding they say. While open source software has been proven viable, open source art... kids aren't hopping buses to Hollywood to pursue dreams of becoming open source rock stars. They're after fame and fortune. So I propose a challenge to those who oppose copyright. Create 5 break-out stars in five different artistic categories who gain that stardom on the strength of works that are licensed into the public domain or via an open source license. Prove your copyright-free business models can create the levels of fame and fortune that will inspire the next generation of artists."

Submission + - Should We SEO Our Children?

gbulmash writes: ""Freakonomics" turned a lot of people on to how your name can affect your career prospects. Now a Wall Street Journal article is discussing parents who are considering how well their children will rank in Google searches when they pick the child's name. With everyone "googling" each other, common names make pages related to you harder to find. Is this the future of baby naming: search engine optimizing our children?"

Submission + - Open Source Supporter = Copyright Supporter?

gbulmash writes: "This essay claims that without copyright granting an author the right to set licensing terms for his/her work, the GPL could not be enforced. It says that those who support the GPL while calling for the abolishment of copyright are being unintentionally ironic, because they're calling for the abolishment of the exact thing that makes possible the alternative they're supporting. It concludes that if you support the GPL or any open source license (other than public domain), your argument is not whether to abolish copyright, but how to reform copyright."

Submission + - Google Won't Index JavaScript: How To SEO Web 2.0

gbulmash writes: "Google doesn't index JavaScript-generated content, as I found out with an experiment I did in March. Seven weeks later, the page still does not come up in a Google search for the nonsense words inserted via JavaScript. So, if you're trying to attract search-driven traffic to your Web 2.0 site, how do you keep your cool JavaScript features while getting the spiders to index all that rich keywordy goodness in the content your JavaScript is hiding? Simple. Offer the search engines an alternative."

Submission + - FIA: Doctor Who Viral or Beeb Conspiracy?

gbulmash writes: "Apparently there's a BBC producer who spotted the words "Frozen Indigo Angel" creeping into the BBC radio 1 site. When he inquired about it, he was summarily fired... or so his story goes. It's generated arguments over whether it's a real conspiracy he's uncovered, or a clever viral ad campaign the BBC is doing to promote the next season of "Doctor Who". So what do you think... astroturf viral or is the BBC being taken over by evil?"

Submission + - Which Cities Value Funny Programmers?

gbulmash writes: "In a 30 day study of Craig's List employment ads, the folks at Brain Handles looked at which employment categories in 9 cities included the word "humor" most in their job ads.

Turns out that New York values humor in their programmers most, while San Francisco and Los Angeles tie for valuing it least. You can read their full article for other categories, or if you're just a numbers geek, they've posted a complete breakdown of their job statistics."

Submission + - How To Avoid Being Mistaken For Spam

gbulmash writes: "The folks over at Brain Handles recently wrote up how they ran into two configuration issues (one PHP, one DNS) that were causing spam filters to block legitimate confirmation e-mails from their web forms on another site. It won't help you get around block lists or bad word filters, but it can help stop legitimate mail from being mistaken for spam."

Submission + - Mac: It Just Craps Out

gbulmash writes: "Apparently Firefox 2.0 hangs for no apparent reason on OSX. You have to force a "quit", lose all your tabs, and then try to find the pages you were on.

Annoying as all get out. And people have been complaining about it.

Also, I wanted to get the new system set up with Apache, PHP, etc.

Of course, because Mac is the bastard stepchild of the world, Apache and PHP don't have binary installers. And though MySQL does, you still have to recompile portions of it from source, because it uses static libraries instead of shared libraries which means you can't compile PHP with MySQL support unless you compile MySQL from source, making the binary installer sort of useless.

So, while I'd have had this set up within 3-4 hours were it a Windows machine, I've been chasing down error messages, step-by-step instructions on how to install this stuff from source, and waiting for various things to compile (or barf up error messages so I can try to figure out why they won't compile).

So I think the Apple slogan needs to be changed from "Mac: It just works" to "Mac: It just works so long as you have really low expectations and don't mind pulling your hair out when you try to run any of the cool free Open Source stuff it's so easy to run on Windows.""

Submission + - Apple Lowers MacPro Prices... Sort Of

gbulmash writes: "Stopping by Apple's online store to check out the specs on the new Core2Duo MacBook Pros, I decided to price out my dream MacPro system and found they'd lowered prices... by a whole dollar.

Seems Apple got religion on pricing everything with 99s, not just the base systems. Upgrade to 2 gigs of RAM... was $300, now $299. Upgrade to 500 gig hard drive... was $200, now $199. My dream system came down in price a whole six dollars! Sigh."

Submission + - Decent Multi-Format SVG Converter?

gbulmash writes: So, I've been messing with the graphics in the Open Clipart Library and it feels as if SVG is a standard like "meatball" is a standard. Most of the graphics render just fine in Inkscape, but you'll get 5 different renders in 5 different applications. For example, one of the Baby Tux drawings renders differently in Firefox, Corel Draw X3, Illustrator, and Inkscape, and generates error messages from Batik's rasterizer.

If I use Inkscape to export to EPS, the EPS opens in Illustrator pretty much like the SVG does, but (and this may be a problem with Corel) doesn't import into Corel Draw X3 well. I'd like to convert some of these SVGs to EPS, and some to SWF (Flash format), and generate bitmaps of all the ones I converted as well. Some of the more simple drawings convert into all three formats beautifully. Others... well, I can get a nice PNG out of Inkscape, but that's it.

Is there an application that can render the images as well as Inkscape, but also produce an output to EPS & SWF that looks like the render? Or even just an output to a more normalized SVG that will render more faithfully in Illustrator or Corel for the sake of conversion to EPS and SWF?
