Comment Couldn't they use a pair of robots? (Score 3, Funny) 53

Say one, perhaps gold in colour with a slightly annoying, camp voice, that's humanoid and another that's really the brains of the operation in a tri-wheeled body that communicates with a series of clicks & beeps (it's also got a useful rotary arm for shutting off that valve).

It would make for a more entertaining video at the end of the competition.

Comment Creepy (Score 1) 106

Woah! I was getting a bit creeped out by some of the more paranoid comments from our brethren and just at the right/wrong moment a junior spider abseils off my ceiling light across the room and onto my keyboard. The slightest movement of my hand makes it scurry in and under the ] (right angle bracket) key. It shall feast well tonight!

And my comment... don't use Xbox it's Microsoft shit. Easy.

An anonymous reader writes: I need some help, we are a group that investigates 'cold cases'. We are a group that is not in it for money, we do it because we can.

We have a two hour DVD documentary, it has been professionally made.Obviously it is way bigger than anything that YouTube would host. I am looking for ideas on how we might stream this for little or no cost.

Submission + - New Oil Slick in Gulf Waters Linked to BP Well (al.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A new oil sheen appeared in the Gulf of Mexico last week, and now scientists have confirmed that the oil bubbling up to the surface matches the type released by BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil well last summer. Ed Overton, a chemist at Louisiana State University, examined samples of the oil and said, “After examining the data, I think it’s a dead ringer for the MC252 oil, as good a match as I’ve seen. My guess is that it is probably coming from the broken riser pipe or sunken platform."

Submission + - Grab Students' Attention with Laptops & Cellph (umich.edu)

An anonymous reader writes: At the University of Michigan, over 4,000 students will be using new software that replaces traditional student response systems ("clickers") and enables interaction in large lecture halls by allowing students to participate with their laptops or cellphones. Research has shown the application, LectureTools, improves student engagement and attentiveness. The start-up company behind the software is a U-M spinoff, and instructors from any institution can use the tool.

Submission + - Countdown to $100 Oil - Deja Vu? (theoildrum.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The general and simplified theory to be tested in this series of posts is that OECD economies cannot grow with average annual oil price over $100 / barrel. As of 16 August 2011, the annual average for Brent stood at $100.04 per barrel! Are there any signs that the global economy is buckling under this strain?

Submission + - Tesla CEO Lying About Model S? $1,000,000 Says Yes (greencarreports.com) 1

thecarchik writes: Elon Musk, CEO of electric-car startup Tesla Motors, sometimes says things that later prove not to be quite true. In that, he's like many entrepreneurs, who spend a portion of their time persuading the unconvinced and painting pictures of the rosy future, despite inconvenient facts that may contradict that vision of the future.

And in the case of the 2012 Tesla Model S all-electric sports sedan, which Tesla says it will launch before the end of next year, skeptics abound. Pulitzer Prize wining Journalist Dan Neil said the schedule promised by Musk was "an audacious timeline that makes many in the car industry roll their eyes." And, he added, "Even people inside Tesla are leery." The implication was clear: Neil didn't believe Tesla would be able to deliver on Musk's promises.

A week later, Musk e-mailed Neil and told him--in no uncertain terms--that he was wrong. After several lively rounds of e-mail he challenged Musk to a $1 million bet on the outcome based on the Tesla Model S hitting 4 targets. If the Tesla Model S misses any of the targets, Neil wins the bet.

Submission + - Apache Plans Fix for DoS Bug in Next Day (threatpost.com)

Trailrunner7 writes: The Apache Software Foundation plans to have a fix available in the next day or so for the denial-of-service problem in Apache that was publicized late last week. The bug, which in some forms has been under discussion for more than four years, involves the way that the Web server handles certain overlapping range headers.

The vulnerability is a denial-of-service bug, but it is considered serious because a remote attacker can essentially take a targeted server offline with little effort and resources. The Apache Software Foundation, which maintains the popular open-source Web server, updated its advisory on the vulnerability, saying that it expects to have a full fix available for the vulnerability within the next 24 hours.

Submission + - CERN study on cosmic ray/climate change connection (nature.com)

Layzej writes: "For a century, scientists have known that charged particles from space constantly bombard Earth. Known as cosmic rays, the particles are mostly protons blasted out of supernovae. As the protons crash through the planet's atmosphere, they can ionize volatile compounds, causing them to condense into airborne droplets, or aerosols."

It is hypothesized that clouds might then build up around the droplets — possibly affecting the Earth's climate. "To find out, Kirkby and his team are bringing the atmosphere down to Earth in an experiment called Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets (CLOUD)."

"Early results seem to indicate that cosmic rays do cause a change. The high-energy protons seemed to enhance the production of nanometre-sized particles from the gaseous atmosphere by more than a factor of ten. But, Kirkby adds, those particles are far too small to serve as seeds for clouds."
