Journal Journal: I still can't work

Luckily I finished Harry Potter (read my opinion about it here), but something still prevents me doing my job as a programmer.. I don't know.. I just feel like doing something else.. anything but work.

Is that ADHD?

Journal Journal: Winamp and anonymous proxies

Recently I got fed up from my modem and got an ADSL connection. Funny that it's cheaper than flat-rate modem connection for now.
The most important thing that broadband enabled me is all those net-radio stations. Previously, even the low bitrate radio stations didn't stream well with my slow connection, but now I can listen to anything!

I prefer using Winamp since "its" stations often have higher bitrates than those who use Windows Media Player (which got a sucky interface anyway) But, it's not perfect. My ISP uses a stupid webcache proxy on port 80 which corrupts the stream and makes it skip for some reason, and there are several nice stations which broadcast only on port 80. So what's the solution? To connect through an anonymous proxy!

I wonder if it's okay to hog up the bandwith of the misconfigured proxies like that.. oh well, their problem I guess. ;)

Update: Seems that it's hard to find proxies which are fast enough to stream radio stations. The first proxy I used worked perfectly, but it got closed after one hour of usage..

The Matrix

Journal Journal: Smarky

Wherever I come near my PC, my nose starts dripping. It doesn't happen when I sit to watch TV in somewhere else, for example. Meaning: Something is wrong with my room!

Journal Journal: Alcoholic drinks I like 15

Irish Cream (of Bally's. Damn it's tasty)
Sangria (recipe by MiTEG, untested yet)

More to come.
I like grape juice too!

The Gimp

Journal Journal: Moving the eyes

When I was young, I didn't know how to move my eyes. I envied all the other people who could move their eyes, while I didn't know how to do that. I only noticed one thing: I did move my eyes when I was looking on my mirror image and turned my head. But I had no idea how to control it.

Only at the age of 6 or more I figured out that when I request my eye to change the "camera angle", the result is that my eye moves! The problem always was that unlike other muscle movements in front of the mirror, it's hard to see what happens after you move your eyes.

Journal Journal: Heritage and other aftershaves

I have a sample of an aftershave that really smells good. It's called "Excel" and it's supposedly created by a company called "Skinditioner's inc. New York".

So today I went to that pharmacy network to buy it, but apparantly this kind of aftershave is extinct, and it's so sad! I liked its scent a lot.. that girl kissed me on the lips several times because she liked its smell.

I called several other stores but none had it.. so I had to buy something else: Heritage (eau de toilette) today. I hope it will smell good, unlike some of the other perfumes that smelled like air fresheners. Damn it's expensive.

Journal Journal: Staying up late at night

I hate staying late at night wasting time on the net instead of going to sleep. That's why I connected my computer to the power through a clock which is supposed to automatically cut the computer power at around midnight.

However I keep moving the override switch for various lame reasons (I'm downloading this file and don't want it to get corrupt.. I'm chatting with those interesting people). But today is the time to cancel the override once again.

Good night!

GUI

Journal Journal: The phone with the caller ID

(Doesn't the topic looks like a mouse and an handset? That's why I've chosen it)

I have a stupid white Galaxy phone with caller ID, which requires 3 batteris (4.5v altogether) but it started making troubles and got stuck several times, so I took off the batteries. So the phone got functional again, but the features that required the battery power, like the caller ID and speakerphone, stopped working.

The caller ID (CID) was kinda broken anyway, since it gave me many false reports of random numbers for some reason - especially when I turned on the computer or used the modem.

But today I needed the CID again since I have to know beforehand if that crazy girl is calling me. But instead of connecting batteries, I connected a transformer to the phone.

At first I set it to 4.5 volts, but it was too much (seems that the transofmer's power is much greater than battery power), so I lowered it to 3 volts. It's the minimum but it's still too much for the phone since the LCD screen turns on all its digits. You can still know what the phone wants to display, but it's hard to know.

But what, at least the CID doesn't report me false numbers. Isn't it great?

Update (Apr18): I got back home today and saw 2 false CID reports on the screen. The phone is misbehaving again.. bummer. Luckily I've chosen the right kind of birthday present: A new wireless phone with CID.

Hardware

Journal Journal: Fluorescent story

Long time ago (around 10 years) I went into that abandoned garage and took things from it, and one of the things was that ceiling fluorescent light. I attached a wire with a switch and a socket to it and turned it into a moveable light.

But what, I didn't connect the switch correctly.
As you know, the home electricity comes in 2 wires: Live and neutral (*). I made that the switch will cut the NEUTRAL wire, instead of the LIVE wire. The result was that when I turned off the switch, electricity still flowed from the LIVE wire (into the ground I suppose) and made the bulb blink or glow. You could notice that only when the room was dark, but still it could sometimes disturb my sleep.

So only some days ago I disconnected the wire and re-attached the switch correctly so it'll cut the LIVE wire. So now the lamp completely goes out when I turn off the switch, and does not glow lightly anymore. I'm sure I did the right thing, but the lamp looks much more boring from now on..

The difference between the wires is that if you touch the live wire, you are likely to get electrified (but not to death - especially if your ground fault circuit interrupter {anti-electrification switch} is functioning. I checked it when I was young!). If you touch the neutral wire then maybe nothing would happen to you. I never tried touching both of the wires, but I'm afraid it might mean death.

(The whole concept is unclear to me. If it's alternating current, how come that both of the wires aren't the same?).

User Journal

Journal Journal: Comments disabled 1

How I hate when people intentionally write journals with comments disabled! Especially when it's something I want to respond about, like this thing which claims that the Uplift Series by David Brin is an unfunny joke.

Christmas Cheer

Journal Journal: Love love all around

People all around me write journals about how fun it is to be in love, and how they enjoy the winter kisses or stuff like that. I feel like marking them all as foes.

Hmm.. does this mean I'm a negative person? Nope. Wait till I get a girlfriend and I doubt anyone would be able to stand the sappiness flowing from my journal!

Music

Journal Journal: Is my singing that bad? (and more crap!)

I tried singing near one dog and 3 cats. They all ran away. Does it mean I should avoid doing it in public?

And another thing: I totally hate the singers who sing about how bad their childhood was and how nasty their parents were. I don't care about you, Eminem and Pink! The best solution will be to involve you with some sort of kiddie-porn scandal which will prevent anyone from putting your songs ever again.

Announcements

Journal Journal: Anouncing the creation of IdleChat 8

About 4 years ago, I particiapted in an fidonet-based echomail network [their site isn't useful - don't bother visiting]. Those networks used to flourish during the days before the internet.

What's echomail? The thing that resembles echomail the most is Usenet, or the newsgroups, besides that when you post a message in echomail, it doesn't have to be adressed to ALL (or to the one you're replying to), unlike in the newsgroups. Another difference is that people usually read messages in the order of the creation, instead of the thread order (similar to flat mode here). And another thing: echomail is typically read using a dedicated DOS or console program, using a fixed-mode font, and not using a browser. Using that program you can move between messages using the arrows, so no mouse is involved.

Echomail was spreaded using BBSs and modems, and it had an offline nature. You usually downloaded all the messages through compressed packets, and after that the modem got disconnected and you could sit and read the messages. It required some technical knowledge, so it typically didn't have a lot of girls.. and when I first got into the 'net, I was surprised to see so many girls on IRC.

But enough of this history lesson. The thing that matters most is that it had one "folder" called I_IDLECHAT, where people wrote nonsense, like what they ate today, what people they met, how their tooth aches and other stuff like that. And this is what I wish to recreate.

You see, there's something similar to Idlechat here, which is Trolltalk. You can write about nonsense there and usually you won't get moderator warnings (like in echomail) or downmods (like here), but it's a bad place. People do crapflooding or just write rotten stuff there. So, I wish to recreate Idlechat, and it will be recreated here, in my journal. I will add as friends people who tend to write in the same manner as me (Com2Kid is the first to come in mind, although I'm going to be much worse), and we'll have a network of Idlechatters.

Hurray for us!
