The electricity cost is what's so painful. I have an old Intel Q6600 system with 4x1TB disks. Power consumption is something like 110 watts, or $11/month.

I could swap the drives out and keep power about the same, but at some point it becomes kind of expensive to keep spinning disks.

I think major leaps of density will eliminate platters. Why bother with them at all with their ridiculously slow seek times, heat, power consumption? At high capacities they're more of a risk to data integrity due to slow array rebuild times and it takes dozens of them to equal the IOPS of flash. Even now platters are either useful for their high density as Tier 3 in a SAN or in large numbers to get IOPS.

If there was a huge leap in flash densities I think they would get cheap enough that no one would bother, even if they were "unreliable" consumer MLC technology. Vendors could just double the extra flash used for recovery of bad cells and increase the endurance.

Why yes! Just the other day a baby stroller magically appeared 2 feet in front of me while I was doing 90mph on the local autobahn, forcing me to make a snap decision between creamed baby or ramming the President's car which was carrying a gaggle of pregnant neurosurgeons to a peace conference that just happened to be in the other 5 lanes of the freeway and the shoulders and the sidewalks and the ditches, all at the same time (except for the lane the baby stroller was in, of course).

    Fortunately being the superior human being that I am, I was not constrained by mere binary thinking and through a little ingenuity and physics, managed to lean my manly, manly physique across the vehicle just in time to ski past the baby and land safely on the other side. Not only that, but as it gracefully settled back onto four wheels, the breeze from the air displaced by my HMMWV (only the real ones are worthy of my leisure time) blew out a forest fire that was threatening to ignite a fireworks factory right next to a nuclear waste storage shed.

Let's see one of those auto-no-muss cars do that!

The funny thing is that humans are "so good at it" that they don't really need the new fangled approaches with the higher risks. We have been doing "conventional" genetic manipulation for thousands of years. Compared to that, our relatively short experience with direct genetic manipulation really doesn't hold up.

The "conventional" approach just takes longer and confers no monopoly benefits to any herbicide mongers.

DNA is a complex language that we are barely beginning to understand. Unlike CRISPr, this kind of thing actually is "hacking the genome" in a clueless fashion. I think this is an area where clearly some corrolary of the Hypocratic Oath should be in effect.

If it's not broken, then don't try to fix it. Leave it alone. The best thing to do (barring any indications to the contrary) is nothing.

I suspect that we are still at the "don't know how much we don't know" stage of genetics at this point.
