[I don't] suffer fools gladly is a crude way of pointing out that you're an arrogant douchebag.

Probably why St. Paul used it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffer_fools_gladly

dander is redneck slang for anger.

There's a good explanation of its origins here: http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/5/messages/289.html

As a Perl programmer, I find it strange to see someone arguing that Python has an English-like syntax. For one thing, I guess you've forgotten "def", "len", (for that matter, "print", "return", and "break" are a bit awkward on a natural English level, though obviously not specific to Python. "pass" what? "try"...."except" - so I should try everything except these ones? "while True" (with an unnatural capitalized "True") "yield" a....generator, mkay....). I find it strange because it's usually the opposite of what Python lovers argue. Compared to Perl, which Pythonistas generally abhor due to its complicated (natural!) syntax, Python is supposed to be a model of sterile cleanliness and simplicity -- which is about like trying to write poetry in Lojban.

If you were solving a math problem, would you prefer to type it in, or to write it on a notepad? Do you think that a physicist would be more free to make abstractions by typing his solutions, or by scribbling on a chalkboard? Tapping 50 or so keys with 10 fingertips is surely not the most expressive interface there can be.

Don't Expect an OpenOffice/LibreOffice Merger 192

Since Oracle has decided to give OpenOffice back to the community, a lot of people wondered if there would be some sort of re-unification with the ex-Oracle and the Document Foundation run by a lot of the original involved folks. The latter has released a statement saying, "the development of TDF community and LibreOffice is going forward as planned, and we are always willing to include new members and partners. We will provide as many information as we can with the progress of the situation. We are currently making every possible effort to offer a smooth transition to the project."

Armenia Makes Chess Compulsory In Schools 300

Hugh Pickens writes "AFP News reports that chess will become a required subject in primary schools in Armenia, where children from the age of six will learn chess as a separate subject on the curriculum for two hours a week. The lessons, which start later this year, will 'foster schoolchildren's intellectual development' and teach them to 'think flexibly and wisely', says Arman Aivazian, an official at the Ministry of Education. President Serzh Sarkisian, an enthusiastic supporter of the game, has committed around $1.5 million to the scheme in a move to turn the country of 3.2 million people into a global force in the games, says Aivazian. 'Teaching chess in schools will create a solid basis for the country to become a chess superpower.' Armenia's national team won gold at the biennial International Chess Olympiad in both 2006 and 2008, and the country's top player, Levon Aronian, is currently ranked number three in the world."

Google Teaches Computers "Regret" 145

mikejuk writes "Google is funding an AI project that will introduce the technical concept of regret into programs — but there's a big difference between regret and being sorry. In fact regret is just the difference between maximum possible reward and the actual reward received and the project is about optimization. There are two things to learn from this situation. The first is that just because some numerical measure is called 'regret' it doesn't mean it has anything to do with the common use of the term. Secondly if you are going to invent an AI technique then picking emotive words for your jargon is a good way to ensure publicity."
