Agreed. I didn't count the unattached garage and unfinished basement but it's space and it's used. And the yard just big enough to not be a hassle and can produce some food and lovely perennial gardens even in our Zone 5b area.
This house will be like a palace when our kids leave.

My neighbor grew up in his house, virtually identical to ours, with 5 other siblings!! He's 70.

W/re to refineries ... we had too much capacity due to our decreased demand for refined petroleum products.

Yeah, being 'merican means tearing down the old, building new, cheap crap, abandoning centers, moving out into the newest 'burbs house fungus, and being in perpetual debt. Just like American Corporate interests are only focused on the current and next quarter's perceived performance so too is the 'merican dream frittered away in short term perceptions of luxury.

Me? I live in a small by 'merican standards house of a mere 1700 sq ft that many would call a starter home. Guess what? Debt free with a load of cash invested and many fancy internet connected devices from which I prove that all the wrong people on the internets are wrong.

That is a lot in taxes. I feel our rates are ok considering our public schools are decent, not necessarily all the facilities but the results are good.

9*3500 != to our purchase price, not by far, and the value has just more than doubled, since we purchased and not dropped out.

I dunno about "tiny parcel" ... Even my siblings who live in bigger cities with houses twice ours have lots which are not much larger.
We find our house size is great, built in the 20s it was above average then and isn't too damn big with isolation chambers built in to keep us all too separate.

And no, not many teachers hauling down the pay my friend, nor big administrators. Pretty lean here, but good results.

Really? Is that a tax problem or a we bought a really expensive piece of property problem?

Just asking b/c our property tax is less than 15% of what we pay in mortgage but a little greater than 10% the value of land+property.
Anyway, ~3500 on 5000 sq f of land & 1600 sq f property.

Submission + - With DDoS Attacks, Size Isn't Everything (net-security.org)

dinscott writes: Contrary to conventional thinking that large bandwidth cyber attacks wreak the most damage on enterprises, security experts at Radware instead found that bigger problems usually come in small packages. They found that a much smaller HTTP flood on the application level may do more damage than a larger UDP flood on the network, and that when evaluating DoS attacks it is important to understand both the size and type of attack.

They also concluded that DoS attacks became much more organized, professional and complex in 2011 with attackers using as many as five different attack vectors in a single attack campaign, and say that no one point security tool could effectively block this sophisticated multi-level type of attacks.

Submission + - MIT Envisions DIY Solar Cells Made From Grass Clippings (gizmag.com)

Zothecula writes: Research scientist Andreas Mershin has a dream to bring inexpensive solar power to the masses, especially those in developing countries. After years of research, he and his team at MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms, along with University of Tennessee biochemist Barry Bruce, have worked out a process that extracts functional photosynthetic molecules from common yard and agricultural waste. If all goes well, in a few years it should be possible to gather up a pile of grass clippings, mix it with a blend of cheap chemicals, paint it on your roof and begin producing electricity. Talk about redefining green power plants!

And I would add the same could be said for some *********MBA who comes in, thinks for the short term, doesn't nurture the topology or Design ... while many folk with experience can transition into strategic "hybrid" roles many do not get the chance to do so full on. An MBA doesn't make you smart, experience, judgement, and practice do. How this still gets past people is beyond me.
