Submission + - New Mac Pro and Xserve released (apple.com) 1

TwilightSentry writes: "Apple's released the latest revision to the Mac Pro and Xserve (Which, the last time I checked, use essentially the same mainboard). Seems that they've upped the clock-speed, and they claim to deliver "twice the performance of its predecessor." I'm guessing that that means that they've moved to a newer chipset with faster busses..."

Submission + - Education for masses in India

parvez1 writes: "dear Slashdot, What is the best way to educate masses in developing countries?Read this idea by Sam Pitroda from National Knowledge Commission of India. Is this a model that can be replicated by other developing countries? What is the best way to say reduce opposition to such moves in a democracy and a country ruled by a different form of government? How does the common person benefit more in developing countries from such moves and yes the suggestion of this idea itself takes guts?My only defense here is nothing ventured nothing achieved.Your take-let the discussion begin! Sell off BSNL to fund education, says Pitroda Chetan Chauhan New Delhi, January 13, 2007 A day after the Report to the Nation 2006 was presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the National Knowledge Commission chairperson Sam Pitroda said that the public sector telecom major BSNL could be sold and the proceeds invested in education. The Prime Minister had, on Friday, identified education as a sector which needed reform to provide knowledge access to all. Pitroda said the BSNL could fetch Rs 80,000 crores which should be enough to take care of the immediate needs of the education sector. "I don't understand what business the government has in the telecom sector. It could sell BSNL and invest the money in the future of the country through education," Pitroda said. Pitroda who laid the foundations of India's telecom revolution 20 years ago, said BSNL is bound to lose its value with the private sector's market share increasing. "By selling it now the government will fetch good money," he told HT on Saturday. But, he admitted that such a 'bold decision' would require 'a lot of guts'. Such a decision could also help increase the GDP for education to six per cent as promised in the National Common Minimum Programme. "There is no system of education in the world that is not based on significant public outlays," he said in the report. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1899225,000 8.htm http://knowledgecommission.gov.in/"

Submission + - Woman dies after "Hold your wee for a Wii cont

NewsCloud writes: "A 28 year old woman was found dead of water intoxication hours after taking part in an Entercom-owned radio station's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest:
Can you hold "it" in for a long time? We're having you drink water every 15 minutes! And the last person to go to the bathroom wins the Wii!
According to Wikipedia: "Water intoxication can be prevented if a person's intake of water and electrolytes closely matches his or her losses. The body's regulatory mechanisms provide a very generous margin of safety if the two are imbalanced, but some extreme activities (such as heavy, prolonged physical exertion), as well as disease states, can overwhelm or impair these mechanisms.""

These aren't Vulcans. There are Klingons in the White House." If you're in disbelief over this clear case of pandering to the 1337 wing, check the transcript in the Congressional Record.

Submission + - "Hold your Wee for a Wii" ends in tragedy

highestregards writes: The Wii's name is inherently funny. However nobody's laughing now that a woman has died from participating in a radio contest to win one of the devices. A young mother has apparently died of water intoxication after participating in the "Hold your Wee for a Wii" contest. Ford Airstream Electric Concept Car 202

Not to be upstaged by GM's plug-in electric concept vehicle, Ford has unveiled its own concept. The twists are design by Airstream and a hydrogen-powered fuel cell to charge the battery. From the AutoblogGreen article: "The fuel cell, made by Ballard, turns on automatically when the battery charge dips below 40 percent. With the on-board charger (110/220 VAC), the battery pack can be refilled at home. Ford says the HySeries Drive is 50 percent smaller and less complex than conventional fuel cell system and should have more than double the lifetime."

How Can We Convert the US to the Metric System? 1487

thesolo asks: "Despite past efforts of the 1970s and 1980s, the United States remains one of only three countries (others are Liberia and Myanmar) that does not use the metric system. Staying with imperial measurements has only served to handicap American industry and economy. Attempts to get Americans using the Celsius scale, or putting up speed limits in kilometers per hour have been squashed dead. Not only that, but some Americans actually see metrication efforts as an assault on 'our way' of measuring. I personally deal with European scientists on a daily basis, and find our lack of common measurement to be extremely frustrating. Are we so entrenched with imperial units that we cannot get our fellow citizens to simply learn something new? What are those of us who wish to finally see America catch up to the rest of the world supposed to do? Are there any organizations that we may back, or any pro-metric legislators who we can support?"

Amero testified that she had told four other teachers and the assistant principal about the popups, but received no assistance. The school's internet filtration software was not working because it's license had expired. Amero faces up to forty years in prison."

Undersea Cable Repair Via 19th Century Tech 98

An anonymous reader writes to mention a story going across the wires about an old-fashioned way to fix a modern convenience. Taiwanese boaters are using simple hooks to fish up the fiber-optic cables damaged in an earthquake late last year. The outage that resulted kept millions of users offline in half a dozen countries around the Pacific rim. From the article: "They work 24 hours a day but the weather can hinder their progress. Walters said one ship is waiting for 30 to 40 mile-an-hour winds (48 to 64 kilometres- an-hour) to die down in the Bashi Channel. The winds have stirred up 10 to 12 metre waves ... After arriving at the scene they survey the ocean bottom to assess whether the contour has changed, and the degree of sediment movement. Then the traditional tools are brought out. A rope with a grapnel on the end is played out, down into the depths, and towed over the sea floor until tension registers on a graph on the ship, indicating contact has been made with the cable. Today's fibre optic cables are just 21 millimetres in diameter."

Shatner Leaks Trek XI Details 229

An anonymous reader writes "The rumors that the next Star Trek movie would revolve around the earliest missions of Kirk and Spock have been confirmed by William Shatner in a Sci Fi Wire interview. J.J. Abrahms (creator of 'Lost') will direct, and has confirmed that a draft script is completed. So, the question is, will Shatner appear as a reminiscing older Kirk in the beginning, setting up the rest of the movie as a flash-back, or will geriatric-Kirk and young-Kirk meet?"
