Submission + - HTC unlocks bootloader for all of its devices (htcdev.com)

An anonymous reader writes: HTCDEV annouced today "HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. We plan on releasing the updates that will allow you to unlock your bootloader in the coming months." However they do note this, "It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty" and this "We strongly suggest that you do not unlock the bootloader unless you are confident that you understand the risks involved." This looks like a new year gift to some.

Submission + - Ron Paul's Record Almost Perfectly Supports Ideals (washingtonpost.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: Republican presidential candidate (and beloved of many Slashdot readers) Representative Ron Paul has been in Congress for nearly 22 years. The Washington Post's Fact Checker finds that in that time, his voting record is nearly 100% in line with his libertarian, constitutionalist ideology. Congressional Quarterly noted in 1999 that Paul cast the lone `no’ vote in the U.S. House nearly twice as many times as all other members combined. And in 2011, Paul voted with his party only 73% of the time, compared to the 92% alignment displayed by "maverick" Sen. John McCain. In all, the article finds a singular inconsistency between Paul's voting record and his rhetoric... a vote which he reversed after the bill was amended. Regardless of your views of Paul, can you think of any other presidential candidate any time in history who has actually been able to match his actions to his words?

Submission + - Google+ Removing Pictures Giving The Finger (techcrunch.com) 1

SharkLaser writes: It turns out that Google has started to remove Google+ pictures that have persons giving the middle finger in it. "Our policy page states, 'Your Profile Picture cannot include mature or offensive content.' Your profile photo was taken down as a violation of this policy". Google+ is supposed to be universal social network, "identity service" and allow sharing like in real life and be a public venue for free expressions. Since the middle finger is so culturally-specific issue, will Google+ also start to remove things like showing the palms of your hands to people (considered insult in Greece), showing soles of your shoes (insult in Middle East), patting someones head (insult in Buddhist countries)? A good number of Google+ users have started to change their profile picture to include the middle finger to show support to MG Siegler, who got his profile picture removed by Google.

Submission + - Belgium Expands Blocks On The Pirate Bay (activepolitic.com) 1

bs0d3 writes: The Belgian Anti-Piracy Federation (BAF), has been threatening ISPs into expanding their blockade of thepiratebay. Recently they have been sending threatening letters to various additional ISPs who were not involved with the original judgment to block thepiratebay. The letter "kindly requests" that all ISPs voluntarily block thepiratebay or BAF will bring legal action against them. The ISP "BASE" has succumb to these legal threats. Also many of the same Belgian ISPs have taken it one step further and also blocked the dns for depiraatbaai.be. depiraatbaai.be was setup by thepiratebay as an alternative domain which directs users to the piratebay's servers to circumvent dns type censorship. For those who can't wait for The Pirate Bay to set up new alternative domains, a full working mirror of the site still exists at malaysiabay.org, which was originally set up to circumvent the piratebay block in Malaysia.

Submission + - Beer Meets RFID (barnoldtoast.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Arnie is a modded Dixie Narco Bev Max 3 vending machine. I ripped out all of the bill validation parts and added an RFID reader and a touch screen. Also learned to interface with MDB, a vending machine protocol.

The interface is written in C++/OpenFrameworks.

His backend uses MySQL and PHP, along with a hacked version of Wordpress to handle all of our users, which now number over 400.

Oh, and he serves free beer.

Submission + - The Man Who Makes Money Off Your Mistakes

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "Meet Hunter Moore whose web site IsAnyOneUp.com gets 30 million page views and clears $13,000 a month posting anonymous submissions of nude photos from jilted ex's, recent hookup's, or vengeful friends and then cross references the racy photos with screen grabs of the unconsenting subjects' actual Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr accounts. “People threaten me with lawsuits every day, which is funny, because it fuels the site,” says Moore who was once stabbed by a young woman who was unhappy about having her pictures posted on his site. “They send me all this crazy stuff, but at the same time they’re just building content for my site, which just makes me more popular.” One of the site's most interesting regular features is "Daily Hate," which contains outraged correspondence from people who have had their pictures posted without their consent but Moore doesn't worry because his site is protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 that provides immunity for Internet service providers who publish information provided by others. That’s why the submission form is so important. It is, essentially, a contract. “Anything defamatory, it’s not mine, it’s yours. You’re taking 100% ownership, I’m not taking the copyright," says Moore. "With my site, I don’t want any of that.""

Submission + - Researchers develop insulin substitute for treatin (gizmag.com)

cylonlover writes: The World Diabetes Foundation estimated that some 285 million people, or around 6 percent of the world's adult population, were living with diabetes in 2010. For type 1 diabetics and up to 27 percent of type 2 diabetics, that means daily insulin injections, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. Since most people would rather pop a pill than get a shot, researchers have been trying to develop an oral form of insulin. However, this has proven difficult because insulin is a protein that is broken down in the stomach and gut. Now a team of researchers from Australia's Curtin University has found an insulin substitute to treat diabetes orally that they hope could help take the needle out of diabetes for many people.
