Comment I third the motion if there is such a thing (Score 1) 163

Zombie movies are written by screenwriters that hate writing dialog or developing characters. Kinda hard to have zombie dialog.

"Been a pretty tough year huh?" / "Brains!!! (scream)

Comment Re:Someone is saying Black Friday was up 20%?? (Score 1) 201

I think that is wrong. While leverage does equal inflation to some degree, it does apply force that drives work to continue to meet debt obligations. The QE has replaced that form of inflation with a much worse kind of inflation. It turns the economy into a game of who can hold their breath the longest. Everybody loses and its a stupid game to begin with. And more people going into debt does not necessarily mean that more people are spending beyond their means and living lavishly. It means that people are out of work and the economy is spiraling the drain. The result will be strikes, riots, and false charges of terrorism in an attempt to control the situation. I think its going to be very very bad and it really didn't have to go the way its going to go.

Comment Why not build them on the beds of rivers (Score 2) 223

Instead of a dam, and all the expense. Why not have an underwater windmill? In fact, you could mount it on a platform that could be raised and lowered for servicing the unit. The cables that keep it from washing away also protect/carry the conductors for the electricity.
If the unit is deep enough, barge traffic could go right over the top.

Comment Are we going to send our children to spy camp? (Score 1) 145

I mean, if we want to protect kids from these intrusions, should we send them summer camp for spies? Establishing False identities the first week. Using proxies and establishing a list of nearby open wifi routers the second week. Is the perfect Christmas gift for your kids now a burn phone with a scrambler?
Remember son, never use the same route back home twice in a week; vary your patterns!

Comment How would that help? (Score 1) 286

The first thing a tech at the store would do is hit 'agree', and then call me and tell me the set worked fine and to stop wasting his time.
Since they cannot know who agreed or even what jurisdiction the agreement was made in, the entire process was meaningless. I just will not buy any more of their stuff. Or purchase it on behalf of any company I work for.

Comment And LG paralyzes your tv when it wants to. (Score 4, Interesting) 286

LG decided that it needed to update its user agreement and sent an update that paralyzed my TV. It would no long switch between inputs or do anything useful until I clicked their stupid agreement. I was a good customer for them until that stunt.

Comment Is hearing transmissions actually feasible? (Score 3, Insightful) 191

We use radio telescopes to listen for stars and other celestial objects. One would assume these produce massive rf emissions. Has anyone done the math and determined if the transmitters currently used on this planet could be heard in other solar systems? Would our equipment detect them if installed there? Are our transmissions able to overcome the radio interference that would be common out there? Is there even a point to SETI?
Are we expecting alien races to use transmitters as powerful or more powerful than our own? And what subset of known space is actually a viable source at the power levels we use for communication?

Comment Do they have a connection fee in Arizona? (Score 2) 363

I have to pay 15 dollars a month, about half my bill right now, just to stay connected to the grid. So adding another massive dis-incentive for conservation really does seem unfair. You can never conserve your bill to zero.
As more homes get built with solar pre-installed, I look forward to the time when entire subdivisions buy a "community battery" and never need fossil.

Comment Currently, the payers are the websites (Score 1) 320

They have an interest in -not- letting people know about security breaches. Also, there is probably momentum issues when changing a corporate website to another CA. But individual users are agile and they talk with one another. And they have no interest in being quiet. The users could abandon a security vendor quickly upon a breach. In fact, the security vendors would compete for customers on just how secure and dedicated they are to protecting their customers. The CAs are not competing for individual users at all.
