Benz145 writes: Here I've taken a critical look at some inherent problems with the Android interface, and why the huge 4.3" Android phones that everyone is releasing are only compounding these problems.

Submission + - Never Point Your Smartphone Cam at a Propeller (carrypad.com)

Benz145 writes: "This terrifying optical illusion is the result of slow scanning image sensors found on most modern smartphones. While the scanning speed is trivial for the majority of everyday objects, point you're camera at something moving at high speed and you may find strange results. There's a video diagram to help understand why this illusion occurs. If seeing really is believing... never point your smartphone camera at an airplanes propeller."

Benz145 writes: "Here's a concise look at the strengths and weaknesses of HP's upcoming TouchPad tablet. Many people want it to succeed (especially in enterprise) but the lack of ports may represent the biggest to the device when faced with tablets that have full-sized HDMI and full-sized USB (such as the Toshiba Thrive)."

Submission + - How to Not Get Ripped Off When Buying HDMI Cables (carrypad.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Motorola wants $40 for a three-foot micro-HDMI cable. Monster wants $90 for a four-foot standard HDMI cable. With devices from HDTVs to top-end smartphones and tablets coming equipped with HDMI ports, now is the time to understand HDMI and avoid overpaying for these cables by a ridiculously large margin. Three simple rules to apply to HDMI cable shopping will save you more than 75% in most cases, and tell you why gold-plated connectors and other component BS doesn't matter when it comes to digital signals.

When You Really, Really Want to Upgrade a Tiny Notebook 104

Benz145 writes "The famous Sony VAIO UX UMPC may have been cancelled a few years back by Sony, but the community at Micro PC Talk won't let it die. Modder Anh has carefully removed the relatively slow 1.33Ghz Core Solo CPU and installed a much faster Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 (a process which involves reballing the entire CPU). On top of this, he managed to install an incredibly small 4-port USB hub into the unit which allowed for the further instillation of a Huawei E172 modem for 3G data/voice/SMS, a GPS receiver, and a Pinnacle HD TV receiver. All of this was done without modifying the device's tiny external case. Great high-res pictures of the motherboard with the modded hardware can be seen through the link."

Feed Engadget: OQO crawls back from the dead, releasing Model 03 in China this month (engadget.com)

Holy moly! We genuinely never saw this coming. If you recall, the last we heard from OQO was when it said its final goodbye back in May 2009, and even today its website still declares the company "out of business." Well, that's not exactly the case anymore -- a little research led us to CCW, which reports that Audiotone -- OQO's business partner in China -- confirmed a successful merger with the UMPC manufacturer in April this year (on the condition that the latter's R&D to remain in the US). This would explain why OQO's Chinese site was still being updated with news after the "closure," while its Western counterpart remained frozen in time.

The juicier news, however, is that OQO's launching a Model 03 for Chinese buyers in Q3 2010 (and the website's banner specifically says August). Don't be fooled by the model number, though -- this 15-ounce device essentially shares the same chassis with the Model 02, but is now packed with Windows 7, Intel Atom Z500 series chip, SSD, 3G radio (compatible with WCDMA, EVDO and TD-SCDMA), and a 4.8-inch 1024 x 600 multitouch LCD (previously 5-inch 800 x 480 single-touch). You'll also get the same old Bluetooth, WiFi, built-in mic and HDMI across the four flavors: Gold, Diamond, Elite and Business, which range from 1.2GHz to 2GHz, 32GB to 128GB (1GB to 2GB of RAM), and ¥12,999 ($1,919) to a whopping ¥31,888 ($4,708). Well, these are still far from what most of us would consider as affordable, so here's hoping the Chinese market will keep OQO alive until it can bring us some cheaper alternatives. Or at least avoid sending the company to its second funeral.

Submission + - Legendary OQO UMPC may Return with Model 03 (umpcportal.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The legendary UMPC company, OQO, sadly went out of business in April 2009, just before its impressive OQO 2+ UMPC was able to reach the market. Now, OQO's official Chinese wing may be offering an updated version of the OQO 2+ (called the Model 03) which is said to feature a multi-touch screen, 2GB of RAM, up to a 2.0GHz Atom CPU, a 128GB SSD, Windows 7, and support for various 3G data bands. The asking-price for the top-end version of this 4.8" multitouch Windows 7 PC-in-your-pocket? $4700.

Submission + - String Quartets on the Web

rueger writes: Lots of people love iTunes. I'm partial to emusic.com. Ubuntu comes pre-equipped for Jamendo and Magnatune. These are great for those of us hunting popular music, but where do lovers of "classical" music go to find new artists and albums, download music, and generally keep informed, up to date, and satisfied? Or as my girlfriend put it "I used to go the the big classical record store downtown, but they're gone. Where do people go to find the newest Ligeti String Quartet recording?

Submission + - Google To Predict Demographics Based on Videos (bnet.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Couched as a way to help users find videos that would interest them, Google has worked on and filed a patent application for a predictive engine to determine demographics for people based on what videos they watch. The system would further allow Google to predict what demographic groups would be more likely to watch a new video, regardless of any headlines, descriptions, or other “meta” data that tries to describe the video. Instead of focusing on keywords and video descriptions, Google would take “quantitative information" from videos and establish correlations to demographic profiles.

Submission + - UX490 UMPC represents years of community mods (umpcportal.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The community at www.MicroPCTalk.com have spent the last few years devising all sorts of mods and tweaks for the Sony VAIO UX-series UMPC. Now they've thrown nearly all of their major breakthroughs into one machine. Using the latest UX model (UX490) as the base, the original SSD has been swapped for a speedy 128GB SSD, the CPU has been unsoldered from the mobo and replaced with a Core 2 Duo U7700 (making this probably the smallest computer to use said CPU). The original EDGE module has been removed and carefully put in it's place is an E169 Huawei terminal which provides up to 7.2mbps 3G (HSDPA), voice, and texting. On top of this, the unit quad-boots Mac OSX, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP (and the Huawei terminal works under Mac OSX as well).
