I'm from Minnesnowta. You want snow? Talk to me in 3 months when I can't see my next-door neighbors house 30 feet away because of the walls of snow drifts.

Haven't had a power outage in years here, either - what're you all doing so wrong with your electrical grid that some frozen water flakes mess it up, hmm? ;)

Prepare for lots of it! First, a question. You're dropping a lot of money on a fat pipe, why are you considering consumer grade hardware? (Unless you're talking about 100Mbps divided by the entire apartment complex, which means you could be fighting that kid down the hall with a Usenet account for a shred of 1Mbps.)

Unlikely that having a black roof actually helps out your house at all. Anecdotal evidence, having a black car in the winter never made it any easier to start, and the cab was never any warmer. However, having a black car in the summer? Much hotter in the cab.

Also, aren't you neglecting snow as a factor? That tends to be pretty white anyway, and that naturally happens.

Google

Submission + - Google Unveils Official URL Shortener (blogspot.com)

iONiUM writes: "Today Google has officially release its own URL shortener: g.co, with the public shortener page of goo.gl. On their blog, it notes "There’s no need to fret about the fate of goo.gl; we like it as much as you do, and nothing is changing on that front. It will continue to be our public URL shortener that anybody can use to shorten URLs across the web." As well, it can be assumed they will start using this service shortly on Google+ shared links, along with Buzz and other services."
AMD

Submission + - AMD claims Xbox 720 visuals on a par with Avatar (geek.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Although we don’t know when the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft will arive, AMD is starting to drop hints about the capabilities of the next Xbox. AMD is thought to be providing the GPU(s) that will sit inside the Xbox 720, so it should be an authority on what it is capable of graphically at least. Neal Robison, director of ISV relationships for AMD, states that we should expect to be seeing visuals like Avatar. So that’s real-time renders of the quality seen in James Cameroon‘s movie as standard on the next Xbox.

My anecdotal evidence concurs. Working overnights fueled my divorce, furiously. I gained weight, more than I ever had before, even at my laziest. It wasn't worth doubling my income, not at all. It was a foolish move by a kid that didn't see past the dollar signs. Never again. Of course, I'm changing industries from Network Administration to Lab Science, should finish my coursework in about 2 more years, so I'll never have to worry about it again.
