I know plenty of people who like Gnome 3 but hate Unity

Me! Hi! I'm here!

No, really guys. OK, I get that things can get rough when major changes are undertaken in your infrastructure. Whether that is Country, State or Desktop. But really all this hating on the gnome desktop has to subside at some point in time. I mean, come on! Ok, the guys made a total mess out of usability testing (not that large scale usability testing is good in any way but still some controlled environment tests are helpful) but in general they pulled it through. Gnome shell, in the past year, has been doing leaps!

I fully agree with you on the attitude part.

On the decision part I'm not so sure. I mean sure you will limit yourself if you are going to only look for admin jobs on a specific OS but the truth is that the extent of a sysadmin's or opadmin's responsibilities will limit your specialization automatically through the passage of time. Sure for entry/mid level positions you don't have a problem, most of your responsibilities can be brushed over in an afternoons reading, but for high end/profile positions your chances are with a specialized attitude rather with the jack of al trades attitude.

Surely these are only my personal opinions, other people might disagree.

Well, they aren't going to get flames from me, I love windows 8. Of course my opinion might change if I actually would have to use it instead of just install another OS over it. :-P

Seriously though, I believe win 8 is good work. Some idiot in Redmond decided that it was a good idea to unify both the touch interface and the desktop interface into one experience and for the biggest part of it they didn't do a half bad job. Still that is little praise if you consider that a goo job would still result in a revolting abomination but you can't scold the builders for the idiocy of the architect.

Anyway. Microsoft did a good job. Apple hasn't been doing so bad either and even gnome is brilliant out of the box atm.
Really it's a win whatever you might choose right now. Seriously though all the hate that is going around at the moment regarding win8 is at best Neophobia.

Yep, pretty much on the head. Mac OS is brilliant for the very undereducated use cases. Ok, it also does a good job for appdicted adobe CS users like graphics artists. If you want to tinker with the os itself or make it do something really, really bleeding edge you should be using a Linux desktop (or even a windows desktop, funnily, especially for GPU things).

Funny fact though I know some "graphics artists", but the most succesful of those actually works on debian with foss painters.

Or is this whole discourse/trial frivolous to begin with?

One thing I have never heard a jury do is call the whole trial a farce. As they should have with this one. But no, they could make a company of the homeland richer while punishing the Korean competitor. Well founded blind patriotism I say....

Though to be absolutely fair I would also say that you should be familiar with some aspects of the Linux philosophy. It's not like a plain Windows user (in the bliss of his ignorance) could read the installation guide and install a fully functional arch deskop without any external help. An Ubuntu user should though.

you can keep track of what accounts are accessed by what user. So when one of those accounts gets marked you just mark the associated accounts as well. It isn't perfectly clean but better deal with one misjudged user than loose thousands.

Still, just banning the troll/spamer and identifying high risk registration locations for monitoring is usually the cleanest way. Nowadays you clean your forum of one user in what 10ms?
