Comment Don't need an optical drive even for live Linux (Score 2) 440

Take a Linux CD ISO and extract it to a FAT32 USB drive (7-zip can do that). Delete isolinux.bin and rename isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg. Then grab syslinux.exe and run "syslinux.exe -mifa [drive]:"

You can still use the drive for storage.

There are also many tutorials out there for installing Windows 7 from a thumbdrive.

Comment Re:other bits to consider besides software (Score 1) 377

Yes. In fact, giving free software implies that you think they don't know how to use computers, and that you're a cheapo to boot. People like to load what software they please on their computers, regardless if they had to pay for it or not, what's important to them is that they chose to do it. Big computer companies and lots of geeks just never get that.

That solution has always befuddled me. Why bother physically securing hardwired, functioning USB ports when you can

1. Remove the USB ports or
2. Disable the USB ports in Group Policy.

The simplest way to prevent burglars from coming in your windows is to not have windows. Though you may like your windows, USB ports are not a necessity.

Look at all the people above you who were fooled. It's interesting how the ignorance of a seemingly intelligent discussion can be illuminated in an instant.

Though the glass displays I've seen in museums are always, as far I've seen, annoyingly reflective. I thought they were kept that way on purpose to thwart photography.

Comment Tell them to do their math homework. (Score 1) 315

A strong math foundation laid in high school and earlier will be fundamental to their success in computer science later. The function of a computer really is to mathematically transform data sets from one format to another. Especially in games, where trigonometry is foundation of physics, no matter how basic. See Xbox Live's Trueskill formula if you don't believe me.

Comment It's called Fitt's Law. (Score 1) 574

Yes, but you gain on the infinite height of a tab ending at the top of the screen. By having tabs on top with the window maximized, you have to only aim in the X axis and move the cursor up, instead of having to aim at a small area in XY, which is demonstrably harder and more time consuming.

That's the name you were looking for for this concept. People unaware of this law shouldn't be designing UIs.
