Submission + - The right to keep and bear bogomips

RandomThoughtEngine writes: I'm no writer. I think a lot. People need protection from oppressive regimes. In the processor age, everyone should be allowed to defend themselves. The US Constitution needs an amendment allowing any citizen unrestricted right to as much computational power as they wish. Please, someone take it and run with it. I am not capable.

Submission + - Excel 65535 bug fixed... sort of.

Skiron writes: On the team Excel blog page, news of a fix for the embarrassing Excel 65535 bug was released — you can read it here along with links to the KB articles.
There still appears to be issues installing it, though, as seen from a bloogers reply to a question:

"We've gotten one other report of this and are looking into the possible cause.
You may be able to solve it by uninstalling Office 2007 and reinstalling it
(then apply the patch to a clean installation). If you try that, I'd like to know the results."

It is designed to use directed energy to destroy a ballistic missile target shortly after it is launched during its "boost phase" of flight when it is considered to be the most vulnerable. When operational, the ABL will be an integral part of a layered Ballistic Missile Defense System."

Submission + - Possession of the Anarchist's Cookbook==Terrorist

Anonymous Terrorist writes: Back in the midsts of time, when I was a lad and gopher was the height of information retrieval I read The Anarchist's Cookbook in one huge text file. Now it appears the UK government considers possession of the book an offence under the Terrorism Act 2000 and is prosecuting a 17 year old boy, in part, for having a copy of the book.

jBubba writes "Windows XP SP3 build 3205 is the first official & authorized release of the next Windows XP service pack; and has been made available to testers as a part of the Windows Server 2008/Windows Vista SP1 beta program. NeoSmart Technologies has the run-down on the included 1,073 patches/hotfixes including security updates. Contrary to popular belief, Windows XP SP3 does ship with new features/components, most of which have been backported from Windows Vista. Some included features: 'New Windows Product Activation model: no need to enter product key during setup. Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista. New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module - the Windows XP SP3 kernel now includes an entire module that provides easy access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services. New "Black Hole Router" detection - Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data.'"

Submission + - The Military Draft: A Moral Abomination (tenthamendmentcenter.com)

populist writes: "Forcing someone to work for the state; forcing someone to kill or be killed; forcing someone to do anything at the point of a gun — under threat of prison or even death — IS involuntary servitude. Of all the forms of slavery that have existed throughout history, forcing someone to fight and die in war is by far the most disgusting..."

Submission + - Guide for Syncing your iPod in Linux

jackal writes: Managing your iPod on Windows or Mac OS X is virtually a no brainer because of iTunes. Despite what some people think there are several applications available for Linux that keep your iPod updated with your latest songs. The table provided in this article gives a great overview on which Linux application is right for you based upon your needs. What a timesaver this guide was for me!
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Proof that someone is watching over Linux?

An anonymous reader writes: The recent delivery to http://www.kernel.org/ of a kickbut server from HP had some serious shipping trouble... but the amazing thing is that it booted right up after going through this. http://userweb.kernel.org/~warthog9/damaged_server /

It almost makes me think that it was routed through Redmond first. Just maybe someone up stairs really does use Linux!

Why You Can't Buy a Naked PC 367

ZDOne writes "A piece up on ZDNet looks at the issue of naked PCs. ZDNet UK phoned around all the major PC vendors and not one of them would sell a machine without Windows on it. IT professionals are being forced to adopt Microsoft's operating systems — even if they tell their PC supplier they want a system free of Microsoft software. On the other hand, even if it's almost impossible to buy a PC without an operating system installed, companies like Dell and HP are now committed to supporting Linux as well. 'Murray believes there is a market for Linux in the UK but is also aware of the issues facing any large supplier who wants to make Linux boxes available. "It means diverting production lines and that is a lot of money and so we have to prove the business case," he said. However, he made it clear that he is enthusiastic about the idea and wants to make it work. "We just have to show it is worthwhile," he said.'"
