Combat Vets On CoD: Black Ops, Medal of Honor Taliban 93

An anonymous reader writes "Thom 'SSGTRAN' Tran, seen in the Call of Duty: Black Ops live action trailer and in the game as the NVA multiplayer character, gets interviewed and talks about Medal of Honor's Taliban drama. '... to me, it's a non-issue. This is Hollywood. This is entertainment. There has to be a bad guy if there's going to be a good guy. It's that simple. Regardless of whether you call them — "Taliban" or "Op For" — you're looking at the same thing. They're the bad guys.'" Gamasutra published a related story about military simulation games from the perspective of black ops veteran and awesome-name-contest winner Wolfgang Hammersmith. "In his view, all gunfights are a series of ordered and logical decisions; when he explains it to me, I can sense him performing mental math, brain exercise, the kind that appeals to gamers and game designers. Precise skill, calculated reaction. Combat operations and pistolcraft are the man's life's work."

Perhaps a little off topic but do you know an online article that explains this in detail? (I'm writing my first concurrent server at the moment (in Go) and could use any information on the topic)

Google Preparing To Launch G-Town 251

theodp writes "The Mercury News reports that Google's aggressive online growth increasingly has a counterpart in bricks and mortar, with the company's Mountain View HQ mushrooming in the past four years to occupy more than 4 million square feet. And that's just for starters. On Silicon Valley's NASA Ames base, Google is preparing to build a new corporate campus with fitness and day care facilities and — in a first in the valley — employee housing, adding 1.2 million sqare feet to Google's real estate holdings. 'I don't want to say it's the new company town,' said commercial real estate VP Gregory M. Davies of Google's role, 'but it's not far from it.' Presumably, no anti-suicide nets will be needed for this one."

Submission + - 4-Year-Old Stars in Best iPad Ad Apple Never Made

theodp writes: TechCrunch's Leena Rao asks could there be a better advertisement for the iPad than the home video Paul Sanduleac made of his 4-year-old brother having the time of his life playing with various apps, interacting with content, and learning his alphabet and colors as well. Sometimes it just takes a simple video, notes Rao, to remind you just how effective the device is for tots. Nice to see that Steve Jobs & Co. were able to make the touch screen a 50-year overnight education success!

If I accused you right now of rape, should you then quit your job to spare your company?

If it has negative impact on the company in a global scale I could possibly try and keep a low profile until it's resolved, but then I've never been accused of rape so what do I know (other than that no organization wants to be linked with a media shitstorm like that)?

Check her bio; she's an activist that went into politics after the economic crisis in Iceland in 2009. She's also a Wikileaks spokeswoman in relations to the collateral murder case so I doubt her being an Icelandic politician has anything to do with her interest in Assanges rape allegations in Sweden.

These personal matters shoudl have nothing to do with WikiLeaks. I have strongly urged him to focus on the legalities that he's dealing with and let some other people carry the torch.

I don't think that's an unfair request given the allegations he's facing at the moment.

Why Microsoft Is Being Nicer To Open Source 231

itwbennett writes "Is open source's growth in emerging markets what is driving Microsoft to say 'we love open source' with an attempt at a straight face? 'The emerging markets (like the BRIC nations) are a huge potential market for Microsoft,' says Brian Proffitt. 'And I believe Redmond is wisely not taking the FUD route on open source software in those markets. Why? Because open source already has some strong roots in the BRIC nations (heck, in Brazil, open source is the whole darn tree), and any attack on open source would be seen as a foreign company attacking local software projects. If Microsoft attacked open source publicly in this environment, a lot of potential customers and developers in those countries could react in a protectionist manner and start giving Microsoft the stink-eye.'"

Simple solution: Unsubscribe

I used to get over hundred emails a week; newsletters, stuff from mailing lists and lots of emails of almost no importance to me. I unsubscribed from everything, after all we have this thing called RSS so there's no need to get the same information sent to the inbox.

I also watched a Google TechTalk called Inbox Zero by Merlin Mann and have at most 5 emails in my inbox any day.

We've got RSS for news, newsletters, IM for short messages like "What's for lunch today?", I feel like mailing lists drown my inbox so I don't let them email me at all, so there are a lot of ways to limit the emails you get each day.
