Submission + - Danish Wind Mill Giant donates supercomputer to University (version2.dk)

einar.petersen writes: One of the biggest wind mill producers in the world the Danish company Vestas (http://www.vestas.com/) has decided to donate their retired HP-supercomputer with 1344 kernels each 3,3 gigahertz, 2760 gigabyte RAM and 250 terabyte of harddiskspace to Aalborg University.

The computer from 2008 and already replaced by another monster at Vestas already came cheap — Price tag for the University... Pay for the transport and it is yours....

Now that's what I call corporate social responsibility — Imagine more companies donating supercomputers to Universities around the world in this way...

The Open Source Framework ushahidi from http://ushahidi.com/ might just enable the App developer to do what he wants for his audience with the use of a link imnstead. While Apple may, or may not engage in filtering links in their browsers, other browsers on the Apple platform should be able to convey the information properly - Apple could off course begin filtering content in other ways on your/their devices - But don't give up just because Apple are misguided regarding the sharing of information. This is exactly the reason to drop coding for iPhone or Android specifically - Create your stuff in HTML5 (the living standard) and they'll have a harder time shutting you up.

Comment Why I choose - ND & NC (Score 1) 223

As a writer I don't mind people reading my stuff - heck I love to get constructive feedback, I do at the same time not particularly like to try to get involved with big media "lawyery" antics for now and NC & ND releases and asking people to contribute what they feel is the right price, is a better and more acceptible way for me to head down for now. I would as a content creator however feel rather cheated to see my characters exploited without seeing a single dime if it became wildly popular, so the option is to release as CC under ND and NC to insure that people don't just run off with an idea without prior agreement by me and secondly to ensure people do not try to profit on what I want to make available for free at least not without a consultation with me. I can understand it might be a nuisance to have to get in touch with me to be allowed to use my ideas or characters, but hey those are the terms. I as a writer just want to make sure that my audience gets my stuff with minimum hassle - that does not mean I am willing to sign away every right I have to my stuff or any opportunity to make a profit off it just because someone doesn't like to pay for it, while they themselves wish to do exactly that, i.e. make a profit. Thus the NC as in - If you want to use it comercially - get in touch with me. And the ND - If you wnat to introduce something into my "universe" we need to talk. There is nothing in the CC preventing me the owner from releasing to someone else under different terms - we just need to talk first. Throwing away the ND and NC from the CC license would make me go for a different licence as I wish to in some respect have an influence on what I create. Heck if someone threw a big bag of money at me I might just say feel free use as you please - but till that day - Forgive me but I'll stick to NC and ND.

Submission + - HTC defeats Apple in swipe-to-unlock patent dispute (bbc.com) 1

another random user writes: HTC is claiming victory in a patent dispute with Apple after a ruling by the High Court in London.

The judge ruled that HTC had not infringed four technologies that Apple had claimed as its own.

He said Apple's slide-to-unlock feature was an "obvious" development in the light of a similar function on an earlier Swedish handset.

Lawyers fighting other lawsuits against Apple are likely to pay close attention to the decision regarding its slide-to-unlock patent

Americans it seems do not want to be independent any longer but are happy being milking cattle for power/utilities. The spirit of independence seems to have faded and is nowhere in sight. Which is sad for someone looking in from abroad. Where are all the solar panels on your rooftops, heck in China where I've been travelling extensively the last few years, the building code in many cities even requires newer buildings to have solar roofing etc. I find it funny and sad, that it seems that the Chinese price energy independence and energy stability higher than Americans who price themselves as supporters of independence and freedom. There are benefits to thinking independence into the equation - Imagine the jobs you could create if you bough "homegrown" or foreign made solar panels and put them on every rooftop,.. Windmills that extract water from the air exist - I believe are even manufactured in the US... Take a step into the future and become free again! And do so while personally winning big financially at the same time!!! What are you waiting for ?

Submission + - Blackhole Exploit Kit Gets an Upgrade (securityweek.com)

wiredmikey writes: The popular Blackhole exploit kit, assumed to be created and maintained by an individual going by the online moniker of “Paunch" who continuously updates the browser exploit software, looks like it has just received another upgrade.

The exploit works by infecting a user when they visit a Blackhole-infected site, and their browser runs the JavaScript code, usually via a hidden iframe. If the location or URL for the malicious iframe changes or is taken down, all of the compromised sites will have to be updated to point to this new location, making it hard for the attackers. To deal with this, the Blackhole JavaScript code on compromised sites now dynamically generates pseudo-random domains, based on the date and other information, and then creates an iframe pointing to the generated domain

Moreover, the kit’s recent upgrade also added a new attack. According to Sophos, sometime in early June Blackhole was updated to include an attack that targets a flaw in Microsoft’s XML Core Services, which remains unpatched.

Unfortunately, the changes prove once again that the criminal economy online is alive and well. Ironically, the work Paunch is doing possibly isn’t technically illegal in and of itself, as he’s simply writing software that others then buy or rent to actually hack victims’ computers and steal from them

Well actually the very idea of chipping humans or marking them for tracking or other purposes is one that should be vehemently objected to as it is dangerous and will lead to misuse. People in the western world are lulled into the belief that freedom and democracy is a permanent state of affairs, it is not. Freedom and democracy all stand on thin ice and there is a cracking sound coming from underneath already as it is now. The laws being passed in the cyber realms and elsewhere are slowly eroding away the notion of freedom and democracy, chipping or bar-coding is just another nail in the coffin of freedom.... Elizabeth should as a SCIFI writer know more than many others that ideas like this are horrible and liable to be misused beoynd belief - So as such she should not be promoting it in a positive way whatsoever.

Well I for one almost don't care to contribute to wikipedia for a particular reason - Self righteous editors, I have submitted multiple articles even started one that funny enough still lives, but lately I'm fed up. I have multiple times tried to submit an article on an actor of some renown, at least the same as all the other actors I've seen on Wikipedia only to see it deleted. I then recreated my submission on my own personal wikipedia page and built it more or less to completion refering to exzternal sources as well as substantiated sources on wikipedia, and was planning on working on it there until I figured out what to do out of fear that the editors would heckle and remove the page again, but it happened even on my user space page. The person I'm talking about is both an actor that has played in movies seen by most of the slashdot audience as well as designed costumes for multiple movies, and I just can't get into my head why it is so hard to be allowed to start a stub (a quite thorough one actually - The wikipedians even mentioned considerable contributions in the deletion babble). I find their actions offensive that even as it was under my personal user space it could not be left alone without an eager beaver editor butting in, same for a previous short piece on Cheops-Ng a tool used in connection with networks etc., funny how other open source programs and projects are allowed but no Cheops-ng and same with the actor who is actually a brilliant guy doing considerable charitable work and traveling the world doing his thing. I find it hard to respect the deletionists working at wikipedia and think that rather than focusing on user friendliness they should take a long look inwards to see the true reasons that contributions might be stagnating. I for one shall think twice before wasting time contributing there again. For the heck of it try to do a google search on deletion wikipedia.... makes you think...

How stark is the contrast to Doug Engelbart's career and thinking a true computer scientist and pioneer who actually focused his career on making the world a better place; A man who wanted to help harness the collective human intellect of all the people contributing to effective solutions boosting every effort on the planet to solve important problems and how he wanted to do this - By using computers as the vehicle. Engelbart is begind a lot of the technologies that many people today believe Apple "invented". 1964, the first prototype computer mouse to use with a graphical user interface (GUI), 'windows'. In the same ballpark: Computer video teleconferencing, hypermedia, groupware, email, the Internet and more can be attributed to Engelbart and other giants like Vint Cerf. So how can it be that companies today claim that their patents are essential for them to exist, so essential in fact that they need to extort, prevent and destroy others from building on their work... oh wait... not Apple or the likes, but actually on the work of the aforementioned giants, who again based their work on their peers, past and present. What is happening to the tech industry? Has it become so infested with the lawyers and trolls that we have seen destroy the music industry, that it is grinding to a standstill benefitting noone but the few that are building up their weapons portfolio consisting of "digital weapons of mass destruction"? Has the time not come to say, "enough is enough" and blow a big giant hole in the supertanker that tech patents have become. Is it not time to say to Apple and it's likes "NO MORE". The weapon you can use is not buying their goods, yeah someone will probably sue me for attempting to instigating a boycott against this company and other tech bullies, who truly contribute nothing at all to the betterment of mankind, but merely try to squeeze out and extract every penny from you and me who are being held in a deathgrip by a completely flawed patent system. And before you feel like answering - Stop the blabbering about patents protecting the inventors... that is complete garbage and propaganda (a sad song indeed). The fact is that for every patent issued, mankind is being held back and delayed yet another 17 years multiplied by a factor of thousands as the cumulative effects of tech patents and patent trolls are squashing any idea and though that might actually lead to a better future for everyone. What a legacy to leave behind for the coming generations, which will probably look back on this time, as the dark ages of information technology, with the patent trolls in the role of the spanish inquisition. There is no way but our way and if you do not agree... Take a time out and make up your mind to stop all this patent nonsense now the sooner it ends the sooner we can get on with solving this worlds problems, making our lives easier and bettering our world!

Programmers of the world would do well to forget Microsoft/Apple/Google lock in via the app stores!!! Use W3C web standards to code your applications current and experimental (HTML5 etc.). Use and/or create alternate payment channels to get paid for your creations, why should you pay someone 20-30% for selling your creation ? Utilize the app stores of these giants only so long as it is convenient for yourself to do so, do not let yourself be lured into letting them control your creations and your revenue. You still have some freedom left - Why don't you use it ? The web is still open and needs to stay that way to ensure free and fair competition, but it will only stay that way if you keep coding to open and accessible standards and only if you do not allow yourselves to be drawn completely into the ecosystems of the aforementioned giants who have themselves and not you as their primary focus.... I could go on and on but I'll leave it here and leave with you my strongest wishes for you to code open source applications according to open standards and making sure you create a decentralized distribution system to ensure maximum exposure and minimum control of others over your creations. Allowing anyone the opportunity to completely kill your application because some lawyer says so is insane and customers allowing a company to remotely delete products they purchased... well... It hurts my brain to find a reason as to why you would allow them this liberty... must be apathy to all the long EULA's that people never bother to read because no sane person would surely not let anyone sell them a product only to take it away without even asking permission or offer a refund... please say they would'nt
