Submission + - Turorial: iPhone Unlock in 7 Easy Steps (OS X) (macapper.com)

Milezteg writes: "I noticed today that MacApper had a very detailed 7 step guide for unlocking the iPhone via today's release of the infamous software unlock — complete with pretty pictures. The tutorial looks pretty idiot proof and is built for Mac users, but I imagine it can be applied to Windows iPhone unlockers as well. Those guys who ordered the iPhoneSimeFree yesterday for $50-$100 can't be too pleased."

Feed Engadget: Apple backtracks, updates will "most likely break" 3rd party iPhone software (engadget.com)

Ouch, that was fast. Apple didn't seem to want to let get around that its got a completely neutral stance on 3rd party application development for the iPhone, and apparently got back with Gearlog to clarify that future iPhone "software updates will most likely break" 3rd party app compatibility. Not ignore, not possibly break -- most likely break. In other words, don't set your hopes too high that the NES games you're enjoying on your iPhone today will be around tomorrow, since it sounds like Apple won't be playing Switzerland after all.

Retailer Refuses Hardware Repair Due To Linux 1018

Tikka writes "Today I visited PC World (London, UK) because my 5-month-old laptop has developed a manufacturing fault: the hinge to the display has started to crack the plastic casing. Anyone in the know will know that this is due to the joint inside, and it means that in time the screen will separate from the keyboard. Repair was refused, because I have Gentoo Linux on my laptop, replacing the Windows Vista that was pre-installed. PC World said that installing Linux had voided my warranty and there is nothing they will do for me. I spoke to a manager, who said that he has been told to refuse any repairs if the operating system has been changed. I feel this has really gone against my statutory rights and I will do everything I can to fight it. I will review comments for your advice."

Name Your Favorite Bloat-Free Software 1296

An anonymous reader writes "I prefer software that takes as little hard drive space and RAM as possible. I can't stand bloated software like iTunes, as compared to Foobar or classic Winamp; or Windows Media Player, as compared to VLC or Media Player Classic. What are some of your favorite applications which are a little less bloated?"

Submission + - Man Arrested for Refusing to Show Receipt at Circu (michaelrighi.com)

NMerriam writes: "Michael Righi was arrested in Ohio over the weekend for refusing to show his receipt when leaving Circuit City. When the manger and "loss prevention" employee physically prevented the vehicle he was a passenger in from leaving the parking lot, he called the police, who arrived, searched his bag and found he hadn't stolen anything. The officer then asked for Michael's driver's license, which he declined to provide since he wasn't operating a motor vehicle. The officer then arrested him, and upon finding out Michael was legally right about not having to provide a license, went ahead and charged him with "obstructing official business" anyways."

Submission + - AMD claims the Barcelona = 170% faster than Xeon! (techarp.com)

crazyeyes writes: "Less than two weeks before Barcelona is launched, we had the opportunity to talk to the guy who's supposed to make it a big financial success — John Freude, AMD's Worldwide Business Development Manager for Server/Workstation Products.

John sure had some interesting numbers to tell us, as well as some updates on Phenom and even Budapest. Check out these updates from AMD. There will be more to come. Here's a quote from the editorial :-

"Because they are under NDA, he cannot reveal the actual results, but he gave us some interesting indications of how the Barcelona will eventually fare against an equivalent Intel processor.

— 20-30% better performance overall
— 170% better performance in some benchmarks

More importantly, he says, the Quad-Core Opteron (Barcelona) will offer 45-85% better performance than current dual-core Opteron processors at the same power consumption and thermal dissipation. Intel quad-core processors, on the other hand, only offer 30-35% better performance (11% in floating point) than their dual-core processors with a 23-25% increase in power consumption and thermal dissipation."

Submission + - Clench your teeth, control your iPod (yahoo.com)

Nick writes: Japanese train commuters who don't want to reach conspicuously into their bags or pockets to start their iPods will soon be able to do it more subtly — by simply clenching their teeth. Japanese researchers have developed head gear that uses infrared sensors and a microcomputer to let people operate music players by clenching their teeth. The computer receives a command when the user clenches his or her teeth for about one second — which differentiates the action from other activities such as chewing gum and talking.
