Comment Michael Stonebraker & VoltDB (Score 4, Informative) 509

The guy in the article does have some cred. He was a professor at UC Berkeley for 29 years where he was project leader on Ingres and led the creation of its follow up, Postgres.

His new database, VoltDB, based on the 'NewSQL' ideas touched on in the article, is Free Software licensed under the GPLv3.

Mathematics is the language of science. (all science)

As someone who has studied mathematics and philosophy of mathematics at a university level I call bullshit on this statement. And you make the argument, I suspect, because your understanding of what is science is too limited and blinkered by seeing it through a mathematical perspective.

The idea that occurred to me while reading the summary is maybe this partially explains the sense of well-being gained from being in a forest or some leafy natural environment.

As we know, most plants taste bitter - perhaps plants are also releasing bitter tasting gasses which help to open up our lungs.

I'm also an agnostic on the subject of God, but on the subject of Jesus I'm a non-believer. There's no historical evidence he even lived in the first place, let alone came back to life. It's mythology people, you're not meant to believe it actually happened.

Why not go back to a known historical event? There are some great ones to witness. Instead you'll be sitting on a cold Palestinian hillside and seeing absolutely nothing. What a waste.

All I'm trying to say is that it's more of a science policy problem than a problem with the integrity of researchers.

This is a common excuse made for all sorts of behaviour. It is still the researchers doing the publishing, regardless of whether or not they are in an environment that pushes them to publish. If you can see the immorality of an action you should not do it. Thus this is precisely a problem with the integrity of researchers in succumbing to the 'publish or perish' pressure.

Ubuntu Replaces F-Spot With Shotwell 361

climenole writes "Finally! The much discussed F-Spot vs. Shotwell battle is over. The new default image organizer app for Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 is going to be Shotwell. This is a much-needed change; F-Spot was simply not enough. Most of the times when I tried F-Spot, it just keeps crashing on me. Shotwell on the other hand feels a lot more solid and is better integrated with the GNOME desktop. Shotwell is also completely devoid of Mono."

Open Source Developer Knighted 101

unixfan writes "Georg Greve, developer of Open Document Format and active FOSS developer, has received a knighthood in Germany for his work. From the article: 'Some weeks ago I received news that the embassy in Berne had unsuccessfully been trying to contact me under FSFE's old office address in Zurich. This was a bit odd and unexpected. So you can probably understand my surprise to be told by the embassy upon contacting them that on 18 December 2009 I had been awarded the Cross of Merit on ribbon (Verdienstkreuz am Bande) by the Federal Republic of Germany. As you might expect, my first reaction was one of disbelief. I was, in fact, rather shaken. You could also say shocked. Quick Wikipedia research revealed this to be part of the orders of knighthood, making this a Knight's Cross.'"

US Students Suffering From Internet Addiction 307

goG sends in a piece from IBTimes on the latest study to confirm what is becoming pretty obvious. The article mentions the Internet addiction rehab center we discussed last year. "American college students are hooked on cellphones, social media and the Internet and showing symptoms similar to drug and alcohol addictions, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Maryland who asked 200 students to give up all media for one full day found that after 24 hours many showed signs of withdrawal, craving and anxiety along with an inability to function well without their media and social links. ... 'Texting and IM-ing my friends gives me a constant feeling of comfort,' wrote one of the students, who blogged about their reactions. 'When I did not have those two luxuries, I felt quite alone and secluded from my life.'"

Quoting VG247: "Set in the new world of Caledonia, players start the game as conquerors raising an empire, and then move from developing a village to evolving it into a highly customized capital. Players can be peaceful merchants by trading resources over land or sea and using diplomacy, or become feared conquerors using armies of knights and mages to crush their enemies one by one in maniacal glee."
