Well, I live in an apartment and the power company was allowed by the owners to install these - literally minutes before this story posted (with threats that if you don't they'll consider it a least violation, naturally), and it is this brand.

Mine is not connected to my network and I've already reconfigured their "Comfort settings" to just be the one temperature I like on hot or cold.

The guy from the power company was of course all "you can control it with an app" and all that and enroll it in our program and save $20/mo on your power bill (but we are allowed up to 10 times to just change the temperature whenever we want).

Fuck that shit.

I somehow doubt your power company is installing the 16 year old model being deprecated...

Worth pointing out that while Apple hasnt given explicit help to the Asahi folks (which would be great, wish they did), they have tacitly cleared the way for them to work by doing things like enabling a raw image mode (https://web.archive.org/web/20220326234421/https://twitter.com/marcan42/status/1471799568807636994)

There are about the same number of Cantonese speakers and Wu speakers, Hakka is close behind with about 82% of the speakers of Cantonese, and thats just the ones in striking distance of 100M speakers within the next 15 years or so, so what are you even talking about?

Also dealerships where sales folks are actively opposed to selling you an ev and steering people to gas cars, the larger the better. Had that happen recently to me personally when looking for a new car, had to very bluntly tell the sales staff to stop pushing gas cars at me, and they were pretty grumpy about it afterwards âoewhy would you want to look at the mustang ev when you could buy a gas F150â

Comment Real Estate and Taxes (Score 4, Insightful) 153

This is because of real estate and everything around that. Amazon makes money on rent and other deals with stores, and they also use the foot traffic from their employees as justification for local tax breaks for locating their offices in certain locations. This isnt in any way about collaboration, it’s about preserving Amazon’s real estate portfolio and tax breaks
