Just came back from Riga, Latvia. A beautiful place, but the pike conference I went to was really tiny and I spend 4 days in a room in the Latvian University.

Riga is really cheap - not just because the boss was paying. Beer is 1Ls., approx 1.20 EUR, and food is between .50Ls. - 4Ls. And Latvian is pretty easy to read if you have a basic knowledge of Northern European languages as it's Indo-European.

Yesterday a friend of mine found 2 Performa 475 while cleaning out his storage space, knowing I like really high electricity bills he gave them to me to play with. I quickly discovered that neither of them have network capability, unless you count serial/modem. So I will probably hook them into my internal POTS for network access.

I do have one slight hurdle, neither have a CDROM drive. And as I want to put linux on them this might be a problem as I don't have a SCSI CDROM drive. I thought it should be possible to install the required MacOS9 bootloader from floppy and then install a ppc linux base system from a x86 machine. I know it should work, I just wonder how much trouble it would be cross installing the machine.

Been playing around with a pre release version of Amie Grid Calculation Engine, made by the guys from Recursa. The current front-end application is an Excel plugin allowing the calculations to be done by the Grid Engine.

As new toys go it's really fast and fun, once you are connected to the Grid Services. I had to learn all about Narada Brokering so I understood what the communications did. This because they've asked me to build an AJAX front-end, attached to the broker. Then it can easily be intergrated into webapps.

I'm messing around with my Technorati Profile, I did find something cool: claimID.

I've always loved myYahoo for it's configurability. I've loved the idea ever since I saw the BBCi TV site - sadly no longer running afaik. Then today I was looking at myWeb and found this site Google U.S. Government Search .

I love Yahoo!, but I think this configurability is really cool!!!

In the JE " Journal Protection in GreaseMonkey ." I wrote about this script which saves your JE's if you've previewed them once. When I went to edit it I noticed it was buggy - not the code mind you, the include page URLs didn't cover the pages the JE was posted to. That's fixed.

I actually noticed it while adding a feature to save the last comment made. I might add a save last 10 comments feature, in the future.

Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my uncle Jack off a horse.." and "i had to help my uncle jack off a horse.."

I've discovered a problem with Google's Chat feature for users who have a high number users in their Google Chat - I have over 2500 entries in my address book. When the page is loaded after a successful login a script checks all the current/gmail users to check who is online, but with too many users the javascript in FireFox gets stuck in an 'endless' loop. The browser freezes within a number of seconds, which is not enough time to press the "standard without chat" selection at the bottom of the page.

Luckily this occurs only in FireFox - not in Internet Explorer - so a GreaseMonkey script is sufficient to solve the problem. (Gmail Chat Max) The function called by the script is top.js._Main_DisableChat(true); which disables the chat function. This could also be called as a bookmarklet while the page is loading.

... is that I started blogging in 1999. I was asked to write SimpleNews1, a news input system able to create short bulletins on the front (or "landing page") page, this for the portal of the ISP I was working for.

I started blogging using SimpleNews to create a simple weblog for our department (IT/R&D) so we could post current updates to what was going on in the department and the various project. The department log was based on an project two colleges (Adrianus Warmenhoven and Michiel [Chielie] van Reenen) started at another ISP some years before moving to a new ISP. About once an hour they would write a current status of what they were doing at that moment. They called it nu.html. (Nu means Now in Dutch.) You can visit the current nu.html page to find out what Chielie is doing at the moment, or go back to one of the first entries.

As SimpleNews was a multi-user IT/Business blog it meant there was not much room for fun news, hobby projects, and things not related to IT so I expanded the module to include separate user and project spaces. Sadly I don't have a backups of the entries otherwise I would have put them online for posterity.

On the 17th of August 2003 I started posting to /. in the Journal - my first publicly accessible blog. And although I wasn't high volume poster it gave me a good feeling that people read my Journal. At the end of November I went to work & live in Zurich (Switzerland, CH), leaving Amsterdam (The Netherlands, NL). It continued as my blog until I came back at the end of April. On the 22nd of April 2005, with about 2 weeks to go before departure I laid out our2 travel itinerary.

It wasn't until the 12th of June3 that I found the time and inclination re-tell my travel story in the blog. (I don't like working on or playing with computers too much when I'm on holiday, too much temptation.)

We came back to Amsterdam around the end of October 2005 and went to our house in the Old-South borough (5 minutes walk from the Vondelpark) of Amsterdam. There we were told we'd been evicted for being a month late on the rent - this is ignoring the 2 months rent I paid as a deposit and the notice I gave them before leaving that we were going to be away for about 6 months. They thought we'd not planned on coming back. It took us only 3 weeks to find our current beautiful apartment in the center of town - not in the Red-Light-District, but in the borough 'Centrum'.

At the beginning of December I finally started working for the 2nd largest terrestrial and 3rd largest mobile carrier in the Netherlands, having ween offered the position when I was still in Beijing. I started working on Triple Play; "... three services; high-speed Internet, television (Video on Demand or regular broadcasts) and telephone service over a single broadband connection."4

In December I'd started writing in my Journal again, but by January the job had become so hectic that I hardly had time to continue during work hours. I stopped writing on the 6th of January 2006, shortly after finishing a Grease Monkey module for /. and posting about it in " Journal Protection in GreaseMonkey "

I was wondering, I had a discussion in somebodies Journal about my "I am become Shiva destroyer of worlds" sig, but damned google/Yahoo! doesn't return results for the discussion. It's passed out of my message history, but was in the beginning of 2005.

I've just written a Journal Protection script for GreaseMonkey. I had to after /. ate another of eno2001's JEs. I tested it with this JE, just to check that it works. And it looks like it does.

An interesting extra is that it stores the last JE you wrote in your browser, sadly you do have to press preview every so often to actually get it to save. I tried with setInterval, but with all the cross site scripting scares my browser just ain't trusting me... ;)
