Does Slashdot's memory not go far enough back to remember Don Box's "Essential COM" book (which I still have a copy of) or his co-authoring of SOAP?
He has a longer history of Microsoft related things than the Slashdot summary lets on to.
This never should have happened. The only reason Tesla even exists was a gross lack of vision and understanding of consumer desires by automakers, and a subbornness that let these attitudes persist for far too long.
I don't know what "this never should have happened" means. The reason why all the other ICE car manufacturers didn't and will not build EVs in any large quantity is because ICE CARS ARE SO PROFITABLE to them. They are making a ton of money off of ICE cars and have a large infrastructure for repairs and (especially) maintenance which brings in even MORE MONEY. Did anyone on this Elon hating web site ever watch "Who killed the Electric Car"? So, why are they going to invest 10s to 100s of billions of dollars to maybe make money 10 or 20 years in the future when they are making tons of money RIGHT NOW??? Heck, Ford is already losing billions of dollars on what little EVs they've made so far.
Jeez, does this blind hate of Elon obscure everyone's memory of GM's ill fated venture into electric cars decades ago? Does anyone remember what happened? My , GM went out of their way to CRUSH AND EXTERMINATE EVERY EV car they had so there was no record of an EV even existing. And they did it as soon as CA dropped the incentive for GM to do this. And now, we're supposed to believe that oh, GM and Ford always WANTED TO BUILD EVs, and Tesla just lucked out and beat them? Really? REALLY?
They keep making it, because you keep buying it
The only problem with this philosophy is what happens when ALL manufacturers see this and all of them start offering subscriptions? What happens when you have NO CHOICE but to fork over money for subscriptions because there aren't any cars manufactured which DON'T have subscriptions?

Is there such thing as "too bright" when it comes to your safety at night?
If you are blinding oncoming traffic to the point where they lose control and swerve / crash into you or someone else because they cannot see what is in front of them, then yes, there IS such a thing as "too bright" for your safety. There are other people driving on the road also.
