Submission + - The Oculus Rift DK2, In-Depth Review and DK1 Comparison (roadtovr.com)

Benz145 writes: The hotly anticipated Oculus Rift DK2 has begun arriving at doorsteps. The DK2s enhancements include optical positional tracking and a higher resolution panel, up from 1280×800 to 1920×1080 (1080p) and moved to a pentile-matrix OLED panel for display duties. This means higher levels of resolvable detail and a much reduced screen door effect. The panel features low persistence of vision, a technology pioneered by Valve that aims to cut motion artefacts by only displaying the latest, most correct display information relative to the user’s movements – as users of the DK1 will attest, its LCD panel was heavily prone to smearing, things are now much improved with the DK2.

Submission + - 'Genesis' is a VR Immersion-machine That Takes You on a Reality-bending Ride (roadtovr.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Kite & Lightning (http://bit.ly/1k6maYX), the developers behind the extraordinary 'Senza Peso' virtual reality mini-opera (http://bit.ly/1kWaRqe), have a metal machine parked in the middle of their office called Genesis. The device, which points eight speakers, two subwoofers, three tactile transducers, and a fan at a user laying down at its center, uses the Oculus Rift and the power of video, audio, and tactile feedback to send you on a wild ride that plays with your sense of what's 'up' and what's 'down'.

Submission + - Killing Zombies in VR with the Latest Version of Project Holodeck at E3 2014 (roadtovr.com)

muterobert writes: Ben Lang from Road to VR goes hands on and heads in with virtual reality technology company Survios' newest version of untethered VR system 'Prime 3'. He moves around the virtual space, holding and reloading weapons as you would in real life.

"At one point while playing, I was wielding the shotgun with two hands, with the table of weapons was on my right side. Several zombies were approaching and I needed a bit more fire power. I dropped the shotgun, reached over with my right hand to grab the tommy gun off the table, then virtually tossed it from my right hand to my left hand (because I’m a lefty), then pulled my pistol out of the holster with my right hand and continued to shoot both weapons."

Journal Journal: Checking in again

Can't believe it's been another three years since I last wrote here in my Slashdot journal. Where does the time go?

Let's talk again in a few years.

Submission + - GameFace Labs Has VR Headset on the Block with 2K Display -- and it's mobile (roadtovr.com)

oldmildog writes: GameFace Labs may very well be the furthest along in the quest to create a mobile VR headset. Based on Android, GameFace Labs has been working hard to iterate on their prototypes, their latest is the first VR headset (mobile or tethered) to include a 2k display, with 78% more pixels than 1080p based VR headsets like the Oculus Rift DK2.

Submission + - Details of New 'Totem' VR Headset to Compete with the Oculus Rift (roadtovr.com)

muterobert writes: The True Player Gear Totem is a VR headset with similar specs to the Oculus Rift DK2. The final spec is planned to include a 1080p OLED display with low persistence and a 90 degree field of view. Unlike the Rift, it also has two 1080p cameras on the front that will allow for passthrough video and positional tracking. It contains onboard stereo surround sound and will have compatibility with PCs as well as game consoles.

Submission + - Oculus Rift Developer Kit 2 Ready for Pre-order Today for $350 (roadtovr.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Today at GDC Oculus has revealed the second developer kit of their virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift DK2 (http://bit.ly/1fHtuHf). The new unit has a 1080p OLED screen with low-persistence capabilities, positional tracking thanks to an IR LED array and compatible camera, and a bunch of other improvements over the DK1. Pre-orders start today for $350 (https://www.oculusvr.com/order/) and are expected to ship in July.

Submission + - Riftmax Live: World's first live virtual reality talk show aired last weekend (roadtovr.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Over the weekend, a small bit of history was made. Teaming up with the developers of the 'Riftmax' virtual reality multiplayer movie theater software (http://bit.ly/1g3gpbj), 'Reverend' Kyle Riesenbeck hosted the world's first live virtual reality talk show. With the stars and guests alike donning the Oculus Rift VR headset and Razer Hydra motion input controllers, Riesenbeck hosted a late night style talk show which included a live (virtual) audience, a band, and guests to fill the hot seat. The jokes were corny and the armless avatars creepy, but Riftmax Live could be the start of an entire VR entertainment industry.

Journal Journal: Mod points

I visit here every day or two. Have been doing so for years and years. Karma shows as Good.

Why do I only get mod points once a year or so?

Oh, and seriously? It's been almost three years since I wrote in my journal?

Blender is a free 3D graphics application that can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water and smoke simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, or visual effects.

It wouldn't be a Slashdot book review unless it was cryptic about what was being reviewed.

Another post where the author has assumed the reader knows what the product is already. Sure I can go search and figure out what it is, but what's so hard about including a little text like "Joomla! is an open source content management system platform for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joomla)?

This goes for GIMP, Alfredo, Moodle, Blender, and so on. It's fine to have non intuitive names, but then help your potential users out when they don't know that MonkeySpooge is your amazing open-source PHP framework.
