Submission + - Thanks for the embarrassment, Dell!

lesincompetent writes: D'you remember that sinking feeling when your high expectations of someone were utterly trashed by something seemingly trivial? Remember that time when you were disproportionately wronged in exchange for something barely worth anything?

2020 was on its last legs and, being the go-to person for anything IT among several friends and family you feel confident in suggesting a Dell laptop when someone needs new, a bit more upscale piece of hardware instead of the usual crap which barely lasts 4 years. "Designed for the real world", "With high end features" they proudly vaunt. It took 2 months for the PC to finally ship and be delivered but you assured them it was definitely worth it! You can't just go to the local brick and mortar computer shop and buy that!

It's 2021 now and — oh joy — the new laptops have arrived! You unbox them, set them up, and — living in that lucky part of the world where capless gigabit fiber-to-the-home is the norm — run an internet speed test just because you can.

How inescapable and brutal is the embarrassment when you have to sheepishly explain why you barely manage to get 100Mbps out of that shiny new expensive piece of ****! What the... ? I'm sure this is a cat7 cable... oh... "Realtek PCIe FE"...

In the end you find out yes, DELL INTENTIONALLY CRIPPLED THEIR LAPTOPS TO BARELY SAVE A DIME!

Will the layperson understand you've just been betrayed by perhaps the last brand you — and i put it as silly as it sounds — "trusted"?
Will the layperson understand you're just the last in line of the victims of the abominable bean counters?

Submission + - Apple doesn't like Philip K. Dick's novel 2

lesincompetent writes: We all heard our fair share of kafkian AppStore stories but this one really stood out for me.
This developer had his app rejected just because it dared mention Philip K. Dick's famous sci-fi novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?".The problem of course being that barely mentioning the word "android" is enough to infringe on rule 2.3.10 of the App Store Review Guidelines which mandates thou shalt not include names, icons, or imagery of other mobile platforms.
