Comment Also not down with the headline/summary... (Score 2) 105

I'm not thrilled with a number of Apple's policies with respect to the store and would like to see some of their business practices change. That said, the arguments made by Apple above sound pretty reasonable to me and the summary/headline do not accurately describe the content.

Comment Re:Smart TV = fail TV (Score 1) 262

To be clear, I'm not advocating for "not hooking up", I'm advocating for using a smart/connected streaming device and a "dumb/disconnected television. There are multiple reasons to bail smart TVs:

1) you don't want to be spammed with advertising (assuming your TV does this)

2) you don't want to give yet another organization the ability to know what you are watching (assuming your preferred streaming device isn't doing the same thing)

3) you are concerned that the vendors are not serious about security and that your smart TV could become compromised (all the more frightening if the TV has a microphone or camera built-in or attached).

4) TV based apps are likely to stop working after a few years and generally provide a subpar experience compared to their "streaming device" counterparts

Comment Smart TV = fail TV (Score 1) 262

Add this to the long list of reasons that I don't network my television and don't think apps (which require constant updates) are a good match for being embedded in hardware that is supposed to last for years. It's better to let your TV be dumb and pick a streaming box that has the features, ongoing support, and policies (privacy, advertising, etc) that you want.

However, FO76 wasnâ(TM)t pulled from the Sony store. I donâ(TM)t want to give game developers a pass for their sins, but I also donâ(TM)t want to see Cyberpunk 2077 or Red fail because both have brought me a lot of joy.

I'm not arguing that people shouldn't be pissed when they receive a defective product, but to be fair Cyberpunk 2077 has been less buggy for me than say Fallout 76. Cyperpunk 2077 on my Xbox One X has been crashing once/day. That is obviously too often, but hell sometimes Borderlands 3 crashes the entire Xbox so at least I just have to restart the app. I'm the most disappointed by the graphics - things feel washed out like there is a cloudy film over everything. Hopefully when I eventually snag a Series X and they push out the rest of the "next gen" update, this will get better.

I get the reasons why they would want to prohibit people from having loud, obnoxious conversations for everyone to hear... but that should be an airline policy issue. If it is technically safe, then it should be allowed by the FCC. I have no idea if you could get a data connection, but it would be nice to not be locked into the airline's offerings.

I was a heavy Uber user for years. I understand why they would like to collect additional GPS related information, but their decision to take away my choice and force me into "no GPS at all" or "GPS even when I'm not using the app" was a clear "f**k you" to its customers.

I contacted their customer service and let them know why I was leaving their platform and switched to Lyft.

The rest of the news about the organization in the months since may not have been enough for me to stop using the service, but it has reinforced my choice (i.e. if they reversed their position on GPS, I don't know if I would switch back right now)

Comment Double edged sword (Score 1) 765

Both employers and employees should be courteous and provide two weeks notice. That may still translate to, "This is your last day, but we will pay you for the next two weeks."

So in my opinion, the answer to this is highly dependent on the employer. If the employer is reasonable to people when letting go of them, then the employees should show the same respect. If the employer does not treat people well on the way out, then the social contract is broken.

"Smarts" on televisions are like factory stereos in your car -- a poor substitute usually lagging behind the technology curve. Why would you want to rely upon the smarts of a $$$$ device when you can plug a $ or $$ device into it with all the brains that you can continue to replace/upgrade as needed?

Firmware updates for the TV are the best reason -- but that could be addressed by periodic maintenance.
