There are (at least) two sides to this story and I for one am not going to arbitrarily silence one side of the discussion just because you don't think their argument has merit. A dialogue is the sharing of information, not one side beating the other over the head with their side.

I believe that everyone should be heard, even the crazies. Heck, maybe I'm crazy, but I can dismiss the crazies without using using degrading or inflammatory language, which it seems you cannot. Real scientists don't hide dissent behind a wall of insults.

We can agree to disagree. I will get my science directly from scientists, you can get your science from bloggers. Enjoy your day.

Both sides are distorting and cherry picking the facts to make their side look more plausible. Linking to the blogs of condescending one-sided pundits doesn't help convince anyone of the other side's position. Links to more neutral articles are preferable, rather than obviously one-sided diatribes that belittle others who don't believe in their way.

Scientists are usually pretty good at writing summaries and showing pretty graphs that the average person (myself included) can digest, so linking to accessible articles at the UN, NOAA, Journal of Climate, or even Nature magazine is preferable. There are many wiki articles that have active links to these articles. Or even just link to the wiki article on the global warming controversy

Au contraire, mon ami. I did not espouse any political agenda in my previous comment, but I can see how you think that I did, so I will be more direct. I do not disagree with the facts of global warming. The planet is warming, the global climate is changing, and global warming is certainly happening. Is that clear now? See any political agenda there?

However, as my previous comment suggested, I do agree with proven science done by actual scientists, rather than unscientific bloggers, pundits, or commentators. Anyone and everyone can talk about global warming, but if you want to get your "facts" from bloggers and the like rather than scientists, hey, more power to ya. To be even more direct, I should have added that a better response would have been to link to the actual scientific articles and graphs, rather than a poorly written and arranged blog by some random person who is not a climate scientist.

Your links to Coby Beck's blog leave much to be desired. The headline above all of the linked articles says, "How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic: Responses to the most common skeptical arguments on global warming." The "answers" come from the compiled opinions of a software engineer, not a geologist/climatologist/scientist.

Coby Beck. Age: 45. Stuff I Like: climate change, cosmology, music, photography. Former musician, turned tree planter, turned software engineer. Same old story... I have been blogging about climate change since 2006 at A Few Things Ill Considered.

Publishing Company Puts Warning Label on Constitution Screenshot-sm 676

Wilder Publication is under fire for putting warning labels on copies of historical US documents, including the Constitution. The label warns "This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today." From the article: "The disclaimer goes on to tell parents that they 'might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written before allowing them to read this classic work.'"

An Animal That Lives Without Oxygen 166

Julie188 writes "Scientists have found the first multicellular animals that apparently live entirely without oxygen. The creatures reside deep in one of the harshest environments on earth: the Mediterranean Ocean's L'Atalante basin, which contains salt brine so dense that it doesn't mix with the oxygen-containing waters above."

Geomagnetic Storm In Progress 110

shogun writes "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports a strong geomagnetic storm is in progress. The shuttle, ISS and GPS systems may be affected." They think this storm was caused by a weak solar flare on April 3rd. As you may expect, this has caused some unusually impressive northern lights since it started. What you may not expect is a photograph from Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi aboard the International Space Station showing the aurora from orbit. He apparently tweets a lot of pictures from space. He and his crewmates have taken over 100,000 pictures since coming aboard the ISS.

IMHO, Reaganomics works only in a country where manufacturing is a strong industry (where the workers of the nation are actually needed); sadly, the USA no longer significantly 'makes' anything.

Move somewhere else.

That's completely beside the point. In those locations you're not going to find someone worth hiring for less. Hiring is as competetive as getting hired; supply and demand works on both sides. The question is "do I work in a toll booth or move", the question is "my toll booth is in Chicago, how do I hire someone who's not a felon, insand, or drug addict?" The answer is good pay and benefits.

I'd rather someone who at least has some accountability to me do it than my employer

Can you please explain why nuclear power is a green power source. How is Nuclear greener than Wind power?

If you actually look at impact on the environment, nuclear is competitive. The biggest impact by far is uranium mining and thermal heating of water sources followed distantly by the Chernobyl accident (which IMHO comprises virtually all radiation released by nuclear plants). Wind on the other hand has a much larger physical footprint per power generation and any large scale deployment will increase the amount of support infrastructure (access roads, power lines) in remote locations.

Include real world distances, response times and traffic on shared broadband connections (like cable) and you've got a dismal gaming experience.

They've been working on this for 8 years, and I don't doubt that they've busted their ass and developed some very interesting technology, but they need to get some cash coming in instead of going out.

If they're able to deliver the promised gaming experience with some magical new technology then they'd better serve their shareholders by selling it to carriers, ISP's and content providers to make the whole internet respond that fast instead of just their games.
