Why retire a billion-dollar space telescope when it is still working? That seems a bit like throwing a way a perfectly good laptop because it isn't the newest and thinest model anymore. NASA currently has two follow-on missions from Hubble: JWST, which is scheduled to launch in mid-late November; and The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which will probably not launch until at least 2025.

The key criteria are
The calculation of the repairability index of each product model is based on five criteria.

- Documentation: score determined by the producer's commitment to make technical documents available free of charge, in number of years, to repairers and consumers.
- Disassembly and access, tools, fasteners: score determined by the ease of disassembly of the product, the type of tools required and the characteristics of the fasteners.
- Availability of spare parts: score determined by the producer's commitment to the availability of spare parts and the time of their delivery.
- Spare parts price: score determined by the ratio between the selling price of spare parts and the price of the product.
- Specific: score determined by sub-criteria specific to the product category concerned.
