Journal bmetzler's Journal: The Peace Protestors Are Missing an Opportunity 13

I've been watching for them, but apparently have missed the protests condeming the conflict in the Ivory Coast. If there's anywhere that we should be protesting conflict, shouldn't it be there?

Fortunately, for the peace protests, the US has stayed out of the conflict. I'm sure they are happy. The French, however, have not stayed out. And their attacks in the Ivory Coast which kill citizens, again has been ignored by the protestors. Sadly surprising, isn't it?

The good news is that even though President Gbagbo attacks the French, and the French destroy his air force, they are really not at war with each other. Whew! Good thing, I'd hate to see what the situation was like had they hated each other or something.

So, let's see what the score is on the peace protestor's side. Attacking Saddam for violating peace treaty == BAD. France killing civilians == NOT BAD. US not killing SUDANESE == BAD. Hmm, maybe I don't have the whole picture yet.

Kudos to Little Green Footballs for the mpeg link.

    • But somehow that's ok, and what we do isn't.

I don't see anyone in the peace movement saying it's OK. But there are a couple of difficulties with protesting against it.

One is simply a matter of timing. Protests don't just happen spontaneously, you know, it takes quite a while to build up the momentum and make it happen. The buildup to the Iraq war was long and drawn out, and gave the movement plenty of time to organize. This situation developed very rapidly, and was already well underway before most peo

But.. but.. the peace protestors said we RUSHED to war!

Frankly, with the internet, it takes no time at all to organize anything. Have you heard of "flash mobs"? They don't spend months or weeks organizing. AT MOST a few days. Sometimes less.

And hell, the protesors are STILL protesting our presence in Iraq today. If they really cared about what was
        • I did say that it makes a difference that it is France. It does make a difference. But timing also matters. Yes, you can organize flash mobs quickly if you are already agreed on a cause. What takes time is mobilizing people to support the cause. Lots of people are informed about the situation in Iraq and have a strong opinion on it. It will take time to mobilize similar awareness about the situation in Ivory Coast. As I said, it does make a difference that it is France. However, if there is a long and blood
  • Wouldn't it be nice, if we could mod JEs?

I'd give this a "+5, Interesting", at least... ...but very likely, it would quickly be overturned by the Lefties on /., who would mod it down to "-5, Troll" or something stupid like that...

An optimist believes we live in the best world possible; a pessimist fears this is true.
