Journal Chacham's Journal: Verbiage: On eating corn 7

Went to the fruit store and got some corn. I prefer to steam the corn, as boiling it makes it too soggy. Also no toppings, its tasty enough as it is. Then, pick each kernel off individually by hand, so the cob is left clean and dry. It simply lasts longer that way, and can be a nice snack that'll last a while.

I steam them for about forty minutes, not sure why. Eventually, though, i'd like to try them "raw".

    Here's my recipe:

Bring water to a rolling boil.
Place cobs of corn in boiling water (with tongs).
    Remove after two minutes.

Definitely not soggy and much faster than 40 minutes.
    • I like my steamer! :)

I'm wondering how long they should actuallyu go in for. Perhaps next time i'll try a half-hour.

They shouldn't need more than 20 minutes once you have some steam built up. (My "steamer" is a fold-up basket in a pot with maybe half an inch of water.)

        • Well, the steam starts in moments. It's all plastic except for the heating element, and possibly some rubber. The baskets that hold the food go on top of that. Overall i think it's nice quality.

Maybe i'll try twenty minutes next time.
      • I agree, just a short boil (I prefer 5+ minutes usually, although the fresher/sweeter the corn, the less I boil), and you get nice, firm, non-soggy corn.
        • And someone else just told me he used to eat it raw.

Maybe I should keep going less and less, until i just eat it raw too. :)
  • Eat the cob. (Score:3, Insightful)

This is not a joke. Really overcook the corn using whatever method you like -- boiling, grilling, steaming, oven, whatever.. Make sure you get it nice and saturated.

Season it, then just wrap a towel around the end, hold it in your fist and then eat the whole thing including the cob from one end to the other. You can dip it in some sauce or butter or whatever you want for added flavor.

The first time I saw someone do this I was rather taken aback. Apparently the Aussies do this kind of thing a lot. I have since tried it quite a few times and I have to say that, at the very least, it's a really really interesting way to eat some corn. You have to get the hang of taking bites but it's really pretty good.

Not to mention that it's really good roughage.
