Journal atheists's Journal: Stand Up 14

If you're an atheist, stand up and post here to be friended. If you know of someone (or are someone) who are insenstive to non-beleivers stand up and identify them.

Also, point out those half-assed attempts at trying to be civil. You know, people who post those "You're an idiot... you're wrong... you're so wrong you're an idiot... but Jebus and I love you" messages.

Update:

I've been friending people lately like mad. If anyone I've friended does not wish to be listed as an atheist (possibly because I was in error in doing so), feel free to post so I can correct any mistakes. My appologies. You were all friended either by a remark where you openly claim to be an atheist, you were referred by someone else, or you made a very good post supporting views welcomed by atheists and I confused your views to be similar (read: not always the same) to an atheist.

  • I'm not particularly religious, and I *definitely* don't belong to a church, and it really bothers me when people make the assumption that you "must" have a religion. I'm in favor of removing all references to "God" from government, including the Pledge of Allegiance, posting of the 10 Commandments, and our currency.

I'm respectful of the religious, but most of the time (not much on Slashdot, but much more in RL) they don't seem to be very respectful of me.

Not to mention (in the United States) the belief that that religion must be christianity.

As for atheism, it's about whether or not you possess a belief in one or more gods. If you do, you're a theist; if you don't, you're an atheist. So only you can decide which you are.

Note that this isn't the same as possessing a positive belief th
    • I'm in sort of the same boat, and not completely sure whether I meet the standards here.

I reject theism, defined by Webster's as "belief in the existence of one God viewed as the creative source of man and the world who transcends yet is immanent in the world". I could be called a Deist, in the sense that I believe that something impelled the Universe towards creation. I take a Humean/Kantian position that there's no rational knowledge of the "divine" and as such it is 100% rationally defendable to go e

  • I noticed that you put Banky on your list. I think that he is an atheist, so he might fit, but the thing is, he isn't part of /. anymore. By that I mean, he has taken his journal entries, & started blogging elsewhere. He's a cool guy. That's too bad that he left. If you put him on your list in hopes of him coming back, then I guess that's different.

Another person that you might want to add to your list is perfessor multigeek [slashdot.org].

  • I am another who sees no reason to believe in god, something for which I see no evidence. Some say agnostics have it right as "I don't know if there is a god" is all you can really know, there being no way to prove a negative. But then shouldn't I believe in faeries and ghosts and green dwarves running taverns on the backside of the moon as well? I do not see any evidence to believe in them, or in a god.

  • You may be my friend :-)

I do have to say that I'm not necessarily atheistic, as that would require me to "scan" the entire universe to rule out the existence of a deity. However, I am very confident that there is practically NO truth in any mainstream religion. IF there is a "god", then chances are that I would be severely offending such a deity. The only way to appropriately "worship" an entity that is credited for "blessing" us with an abnormally high intelligence (compared to animals) is by using such i
  • God didn't create man, man created god. The questions of why we are here, how we got here, why the earth sometimes shakes, why volcanoes erupt and why there are floods from time to time were all way beyond the science of biblical times. Yet man has always felt an urge to understand what has gone on around him. This is good. However when science and reason has been unable to answer such profound questions, he decided to make the answers up. This is bad.

  • Hard atheist here.

My belief is god does not exist, we created him from wanting answers we could not get (at least at the time) and to keep us from feeling utterly alone.
