Journal MonTemplar's Journal: Moo-ry Christmas! (Warning: May Contain US Beef) 5

First 'mad cow' case rattles US

The United States has reported its first suspected case of "mad cow disease", or BSE, in Washington state.

Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said a Holstein cow had tested positive - but she insisted US beef was safe.

In response, a number of countries in Asia, including America's biggest importer, Japan, have moved swiftly to ban US beef.

Oddly, France are not on the list of countries banning US beef - yet. :-)

EU Observing U.S. Mad Cow, Sees Current Ban Adequate

  • When we banned meat-on-the-bone in England, one of the nearby pubs stopped doing Kilo steaks, and they never came back! Boo!

It took an age to get the French to start buying British beef again, way after it were probably the safest in Europe. If I were cynical, I'd say that they were keeping out British beef as long as they could, and didn't really care about the health issues. But I'm not cynical, so I won't say that, and I'll say instead that they acted as if they were simply protecting French beef pro
