Journal tekiegreg's Journal: As a meta-moderator 5

Slashdot has been asking met to meta-moderate at least 1x per day. I've been happy to oblige thus far and find it very interesting. Though I'm very reserved about marking mods as "unfair". Having done already 100+ meta-mods I think I've marked maybe 2 unfair so far. Generally I mark as "fair" if the mod generally feels right or leave alone if I'm not sure. But granted as a meta-mod I have power over who can moderate in Slashdot, I feel I need to reserve that "unfair" button for the absolute worst of the worst mods. So moderators rest-easy, I'm a friendly meta-moderator :-)

As a meta-moderator

  • Hey Greg,

    Doesn't everyone meta moderate? I have that link at the top of my page all the time as well. I think if you are logged in, you have that link.

    I follow the same rules... Only unfair the really agregious abuses.

    • Actually according to the Slashdot FAQ...

      "In order to be a metamoderator, your account has to be one of the oldest 92.5% of accounts on the system. This means that once you've created your account, you'll have to wait for several months, depending on the rate at which new accounts are being created. "
      • In order to be a metamoderator, your account has to be one of the oldest 92.5% of accounts on the system.

        This means that after only one year I am in the oldest 92.5% (Slashdot started in what, 1998)? Maybe it refers to the age, though, and at 41, I'm probably in the 92.5% range of old dufuses.

        Unless Slashdot has been growing at an extreme rate lately, I suspect that that percentage is an invented fact (since we already know that any estimation that includes point something is likely bogus - 89.745% of
        • Nah, it doesn't seem made up to me. From your post, I see that your userid is 566974. I have seen other users with UIDs well into the 700k range now. Therefore:

          $ perl -le '$pct = (566974 / 700000) * 100; print "percentage: $pct %"'
          percentage: 80.9962857142857 %
          $

          It looks like, if the current highest UID is 700000, then the 92.5% mark falls at UID 647500; if the current highest is 750000, then UID 693750 is eligible to meta-moderate.

          That's pretty easy to calculate, and if you really wanted to know it

  • I stand corrected. :) Now I remember reading that.
