Christmas Cheer

Journal bubblegoose's Journal: Holiday movie suggestions? 28

So, I'm having a hard time getting in the holiday spirit. Being single around the holidays really sucks. Normally holiday spirit wouldn't be a problem and I wouldn't really care, but now I have an almost 3 year old little girl. Of course Christmas is a big thing to her.

Last night I watched "It's a Wonderful Life". That's one I watch every year. I think I'm going to put up the tree tonight. Any suggestions on other good movies to watch while doing that?

Holiday movie suggestions?

  • Die Hard [imdb.com].
For the kid, you'll probably want something with Muppets, though.
  • So you can see that being married can make Christmas suck as well. :-)
  • Well, two have already been covered: It's a Wonderful Life and Die Hard. But there's also "A Christmas Story," which we watched last weekend and Kiddo really enjoyed -- she likes watching anything with kids in it. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" isn't a "movie" per se, but she'd enjoy it, I'm sure, and you can get the book, too, and read it to her. "Miracle on 34th Street" was on last week, and we enjoyed that one.

All of the old "Frosty the Snowman" "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus" show
  • Nope, it's just me and the cat.

Frankly, i suggest Scrooged, starring Bill Murray. It's awesome, and it involves him being hit with a toaster by the indomitable Miss Carol Kane, as the ghost of Christmas Present!

But i'm not in the holiday spirit and don't want to be, this year. I'm thinking holiday audio favourites like Ray Steven's Santa Claus is Watching You might help, but no guarantees.

Hm. movies. Nope, i'm not much help. But i'm writing on my brick "Happy F*ing Holidays" before i hit people with i

    • Heh, sort of am having the same kind of year myself; however, I'm trying to force myself to be more jovial because I don't want to regret letting any year go by wallowing in misery. Still haven't put up my tree yet though... ;)

Besides, my cat, Spot, loves Christmas, so I'm gonna decorate it for him. He's my child you know!
      • I was going to email you, I went on a pretty lame date last night. I think that's what brought this on.

It was OK, but I could tell she wasn't interested, it ended after about an hour and fifteen minutes, with the usual "I'll call you sometime". I'll let it go and I'm sure she'll never call again.
        • Hey man, at least you tried. If it's lame it's lame. It has nothing to do with you being lame, you two just didn't click! Since I got divorced, I had problems thinking something's wrong with me if a date doesn't go right, but I know that it's not the case when I really think about it.

Don't sweat it man. It's cool to be on your own for a while too, don't let your friends or family make you think that the best thing is to date if you think you don't really feel like it right now. I was pushed to date b
        • Don't worry: if even a loser like me can find a second chance, you should have no problem... Just take it slow.
      • She's just happy to have me home a lot now. I gave her a towel fresh out of the dryer yesterday, she wound herself up in it, sighed, and went to sleep. I don't think i'll decorate for her, but i will be making a christmas dinner of some kind for her.
  • ...what makes Christmas special for me is memories and traditions, so I like to watch and listen to old family favorites each year to get into the spirit. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "A Christmas Carol" (with George C. Scott) are my two favorite TV shows; for music I like to listen to classical carols (some favorites being "In dulci jubilo", "Ding dong! Merrily on high", "Good King Wenceslas", "God rest ye merry gentlemen", "O holy night", "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" and "O come, o come Emmanuel"
    • "Just when I think you couldn't get any DUMBER, you go and do something like this...AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!!!"

I LOVE the George C. Scott adaptation. It's by far the most faithful to Dickens' story and it is supremely acted and the sets are gorgeous. By the way, are you talking about Ron Howard's Grinch or the cartoon? I assume the cartoon, which is great, but I think the Ron Howard one was unfairly treated and is pretty darn funny.

Does it get pretty festive in Germany at Christmas? I think

Most definitely -- it's one of the best Christmas story adaptations I've ever seen.

        The cartoon, of course. ;-)

"The Grinch" (i.e. the movie) was kinda lame, I thought, but then aga

      • Are you people crazy? Yes, the George C. Scott one is nice, but it isn't the definitive edition [imdb.com].
        • Man, that's just plain wrong. Wrong I tell you! George C. Scott's is my definitive version because it captures the book so much better than the Alistair Sim one! Sheesh. Some people. :)
          • Naw, I agree with George. The Alastair Sim version is great because it captures all of the old-timey language, and it's in black and white (although his link is apparently to a colorized version -- blech!!). My dad loves the Alastair Sim version, too, so I guess that's where I got it from.

Either way, you can't turn down A Christmas Carol as an all-time Christmas classic to help get you in the mood. Sit down and examine your year and your life and think about how you can bring some more of the Christmas sp
  • I can't believe everyone missed it. I can't believe this wasn't the first one listed. Yes, Grinch, Xmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, blah, blah, blah. All well and good.

But how can nobody have mentioned: the greatest [wilstar.net] Christmas story [xmasfun.com] of all [factmonster.com].

"And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were sore afraid ... And the angel said unto them, "

    • Good call! I always used to look forward to seeing that one when I was a kid. I loved it. The various Charlie Brown specials were highlights of my youthful years.

  • Gotta agree with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story. Two of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. I have a new one to add to the list this year also, but it is only in the theaters. "Elf" was absolutely hillarious and will definately join my list of favorite Christmas movies.

  • No one has mentioned the original Spirit of Christmas episode of South Park.

Dude! You can't say "pigfucker" in front of Jesus!

    • You have blemished the meaning of Christmas for the last time, Kringle.

Great little movie. I haven't seen it in years so I justed started downloading it now.

I just picked up "A Christmas Story", and I rented Scrooged and DieHard and let DVDDecryptor do their thing.
  • Starring Jim Henson as the Ghost of Christmas Present. If Marley & Marley & the Wailers don't get you going, nothing will. Personally, i'm particularly fond of that scene. *grin* don't know why i didn't think of it before, but that's the one to watch. Watch the one from years ago, not the stupid one they just did last year with Whoopi Goldberg as God.

It's even better than muppet's treasure island; just fastforward through the stupid scrooge/girlfriend singing scene. The rest is awesome. (And look
