Journal FortKnox's Journal: Picture Game Info and Questions 23

OK, I'll go on with the game. If your pic is available on the web and you want to participate, take that pic down, or email me another one. The email isn't set up, yet (I forgot to set it up last night), but if you are itch'in to email it, send it to myfirstname@mylastname.com (where myfirstname is josh, and my last name is my website minus the www. and .com). Make the subject all caps like "/. JE PHOTO GAME" so I don't delete it as spam.

Now some questions:
Should I make it a 'comment in the journal with your choices' or should we put up a DB and a system on the web to tally your votes (which would be more time consuming to put up)?

Should we add 'filler' pics (like Technolust did with his pictures)? It might be a good idea just to add fillers for the girls, since there isn't that many.

  • Subject says it all.

    Also, the only picture available of me has really bad red-eye, and my cheeks look really puffy (which I hate). Also, I'm not the only one in the picture. So if I send you the photo, you'd have to, at a minimum, clean up the red-eye and crop my face out of the picture (I don't have tools to do this myself). Are you up for the task? If not, I don't think my picture will be submitted.

    Anyways, no fillers needed for the guys: it will be hard enough and there are enough of us. For the girls, I agree... Even though we are going to get our butts kicked if we put a supermodel in there and we all choose that. Or worse that one of the grrrls here looks so good we all think she's a model and therefore don't choose her. ;-) I guarantee you, that day will not be our best day ;-)))
    Anyways, I would also submit a pic of Spirit00 to enlarge the girl-pool, but ehm, if

    • DB system: well... Depends how much time it's worth to you. I mean, this is a one-time game. If you can dash out the code in PHP/JSP/ASP/Whatever in half an hour, be my guest. If you can't, let it be. It's just a game, not a professional website (unless you want to start a sourceforge project for silly-photo-guessing-games *grin* Hey, someone should check! It might even exist, knowing sourceforge)

      Pretty easy system, I would think. I would do it as a Slideshow with a list of users that can only be select
      • Definitely not text-browser friendly.
        If you have an idea of a web-based picture-guessing game that would work on a text browser, I'm sure we'd all love to hear it ;)
      • But you also need some basic authentication system. I mean, we only want one vote per person right? Overridable (if you change your mind), but only one per person.

        You could say: just write your username in a textbox, but that's not good enough since you might be able to vote in my name.

        As far as I'm concerned, your system looks nifty. Don't think you need to do the JavaScript thingy. Just let the server check for dupes and bounce give an error when there are dupes (sophisticated version will even sa

        • How about when you submit a picture you submit a password as well (different from your /. account obviously) then when you vote there can simply be a big flat text file with "[/. name] = [password]" pairs. Then for authentication you can have the user fill out the form with name / password and automatically eliminate the option of guessing their own picture.

          • Yes... That indeed would work. What you describe would be the correct way to do it. We need to trust FortKnox however ;-)

            This isn't overcomplicated.... this is needed. But perhaps I'm being overly paranoid because I've done the login/logout of about a gazillion ebanking applications ;-)

  • I think filler should depend on how many entries you get. When you're done collecting pics, tell us how many you have. Then we can know if filler is more appropriate.

    I'll be sending my pics when I get home tonight. I don't keep them at work.

      There ought to be at least 5 entries per gender...7 or 8 would be better. We might actually get that, but ya never know...

      That was something I hadn't really considered till you mentioned it. I'm thinking that the range is probably 12-45 with a median of 26... just a guess.

        Hmmm. I don't think the standard deviation will be that high. I'm thinking more like 16-35 with a mean around 26. But it would be interesting to find out.

    I think the quicker the better.. :) a Journal Entry sounds pretty good.

    filler probably isn't good unless there is an extreme lack of pictures. like mentioned above, feelings and all that.

    i think je voting would be fun unless you (or someone) really want(s) to do the necessary coding/testing. whatever.
  • It looks like there will be enough people submitting pictures to not require filler - for the guys at least. Hopefully most of the girls will join in the fun - if there's at least 4 or 5, then no filler would be required...

    I will try and get a pic to you sometime in the next day or two...
