Journal turgid's Journal: Stormy Weather 5

We are about to be got by the cloud. They want to throw away all of our working servers and put everything on "the cloud."

"The cloud" will be on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean at the end of a 2Mbit/s link (with lots of latency). Several hundred people will have to get their work (developing software) done this way.

At least it wasn't a pointed stick.

The industry doesn't know how to deal with a pointed stick.

  • So far I have managed to keep real servers. We have a couple of VPS's but for the most part, we have real-life hardware. Actually, we just dropped about $100k USD on some new hardware.

This cloud thing really isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Here's one: what do you do about SPARC servers if they tell you you have to use a cloud?

I'm old and cynical enough to imagine that a "cloud" is half a dozen 32-bit Windows boxes in a basement.

    • VPSes are fine for many tasks. Much of the real-life hardware of today is obscenely overpowered for the tasks at hand, hence the idea of running more than one virtual server on them.

Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience.
